Skip the chop and channel as well as the S-10 frame swap. these are all MAJOR projects that will take a ton of time away from your goal of having a safe, clean, fun driver by graduation-even if it's in primer. That car won't take well to a chop anyway.

Get a local wrecking yard to donate a whole vehicle that can supply the drivetrain (engine, trans, rearend), wiring harness and all.
Split the class into groups. One group to work on going through the engine (you may get lucky and get a wreck that doesn't need a full engine rebuild). Next group to go through the front suspension/brakes, and another to start working on the interior. Anyone left standing around can clean parts, and work on sub assemblies (polish stainless trim on a buffing wheel, etc).

After waiting to get the shop back due to a missed deadline on our school remodel we are well on our way! The kids are having a blast, and doing great, the body is off the original frame floors are cut out, the s10 from French lake auto parts is in the shop and in the middle of being wire brushed. Skip Nolan has been a huge help so far, we got to take the class out to the yard to pick up the s10 rolling chassis, the kids got to go out in the yard and pull parts from cars, and see every thing French Lake had. We are starting to talk engines and what we want to run, kids are starting to learn how to patch in fenders, and form panels, we built an engine hoist to lift the body off the frame, the kids are working on building a body stand that will roll over the chassis so we can save space in the shop. We are working on wheel dollies for the rolling chassis as well. So far so good, it is a favorite class for the kids and myself!

Chevs of the 40s has also stepped up to the plate to help us with the project, they are helping to fund the build as well as hooking us up with experts for advice.

I got to say thanks for leading kids into the world of HotRodN with out our local highschool career center in my small town I would not be the metal worker, fabricator, hotrodder I am today. Most kids today are driving riceburners & Or playing some stupid mind rotting video game. Need more wrench turning grease monkeys out. thanks again.

It has been a while since we have posted, sorry, we have been very busy! Today the kids had a day off for conferences, but most of them came in to work! How many kids want to come to school on their day off! I think that means it's working:) we a little behind schedule, we fought the engine and trans for a week longer than we wanted and fitting the engine in was a bit longer too, but we got it in and all back together, so I am feeling a bit relieved.

Its been a while since I have posted, the Students at Onamia High School have been hard at work building their 1951 Chevy Styleline Wagon. This was an all year, 1 hour a day cap stone class for seniors that have taken several of my Metal Fab, Engineering Design, and Small Engines Classes. This car was a huge under taking, and I cant say enough how hard the kids worked. Stay tuned next fall for more video edits and pics. Below is Thankyou letter to our sponsors and a list of everything the students did to the car up to this point, written by the kids. Be sure to check out the sponsors at the end!!

    "Dear Sponsors and Program Mentors,

As the 2013-2014 school year draws to a close, all of students involved in Onamia's Hot Rod Fabrication class would like to express our deepest gratitude for helping make this year's build such a success. We worked very hard all year on the 1951 Chevy Styleline Wagon. We learned design, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering principles, problem solving, advanced welding and fabrication techniques, the history of Hot Rodding, and how to work as a team. As the year went on, we gained a greater respect for quality and attention to detail. We developed a sense pride in our work and came to understand that our signature is on everything we build whether we write it or not. We are sincerely grateful for your support and sponsorship to our program. We hope that you will continue to support this program for years to come so we can pass this opportunity on to the future gear heads of Onamia High.

    Thank You,

    Students of Onamia High School

Hey guys I am back! The car is finally on the road! I wouldn't say it's complete but it drives stops and idles really well. The boys worked really hard this year! Every thing from building open style headers, fabricating and welding the entire floor, mounting doors, designing a custom spring loaded fuel door and installing the glass. The boys even installed the wiring harness and everything works! We will have the car at the Onamia Days car show and swap Saturday and at back to the 50s next Friday and Saturday! It will be my first time showing a car at the big show so I am excited! image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

we had our first show today, our local town festival puts on a pretty good show considering how small we are (100 cars.) The car got a lot of attention and we brought home some hardware, outstanding in class. the first build my students did 4yrs ago took home best in show! Overall, it was a great first showing and we are excited to be going to Back to the 50s this up coming weekend! Truck on the left is the truck that took best in show! There were a few grumpy old timers with that truck getting all of the attention, but it really draws people in! 48 ford pick up chopped, channeled, custom 2x4" tube frame, y block 292, triple strombergs, ladder bar rear, transfers front. no paint! I wish I had a shop teacher like you in high school, mine judged me by my older brother, so I got treated like shit the first semester, and never went back. However I did take up welding, and he was a great teacher. When I had to take a welding class for auto body at tech college I finished it in half the time. Keep up the good work, and hope to see you up there on Saturday.

bummer to hear about you teacher, the worst feeling is when I see a kid shut down because of something I did or said. the carruns and drive really well! I think it needs a wheel bearing tho. front right slowly gets louder the more I dive it, quiet at first, after a mile or so it starts, gets worse when I turn. I plan on driving it to St Paul from Onamia, its about 90 miles, that will be the first ride longer than around town!

  28. Congratulations! I'm so glad to see another "Tin Woody" saved from the crusher or the wrath of mother nature.

i think a program like this is a blessing. in the st. louis area, i think most kids have to attend a tech high school to get a manual training education. my high school back in the covered wagon days had good shop courses, but daddy dear was intent on me being a "suit," so shop was verboten. oh, i wound up being a teamster for 26 years and still wish i'd taken shop classes!

That is why I love the class, it teaches so much in one course, high level fabrication and welding, along with problem solving troubleshooting, research and design, critical thinking, career/workplace skills, engineering, automotive tech, history of the automotive industry and hot rodding/car kulture. when kids leave they can choose their path, workforce, 2yr, 4yr, military and have gained skills from the course that will make them successful
