After being lucky enough to get in on the last batch of shift knobs that was offered by Ryan and fabbed by Saxman I paid a visit to Saxmans website. While looking through the display and examples of shift knobs he makes, I saw one that was commemorative of the 8th Air Force that flew out of England in WWII. Well my father was a bombardier on a B-17 with the 15th Air Force and was ***igned to the 2nd Bomb Group that flew out of Foggia, Italy in WWII. I got in touch with Saxman to see if he would make me up a shift knob with the logo of the 2nd Bomb Group. This is what he put together for me and I couldn't be more pleased. The Latin motto translates to "Defenders of Liberty", which these men and women from the greatest generation did and some did to their death. Here is what I received in the mail today from Saxman, and I couldn't be more pleased. It will be going in my 31 Roadster. Pops died in 1973 from an aneurysm caused by a blow to the head when the plane he was in on a flight from Vietnam to the Philipines dropped dramatically after hitting an air pocket, anyway that's what my family was told. For any that want to know here is Saxmans website: http://www.1954design.com/knobs.html
That's awesome. (From a guy born in 73). Thanks for sharing Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Very cool, Brandon. I want one! My Dad was a waist gunner on a B-17 with the 20th bomb squadron of the 2nd bomb group on mission out of Foggia on Feb 24, 1944 when he was shot down north of Steyr. How do I find Saxman's website?
Mike is a great guy that will bend over backwards to make hat you want. HRP http://www.1954design.com/knobs.html
The 8th AF knob is one Mike made up for me. We emailed some designs back and forth and this was the final one. It is on my 31.
I really liked the design of that 8th AF. At first I was going to go with the 15th AF logo but than I wanted to break it down a little more, which would be to the bomb group he was ***igned to.
What a great post, appropriate to Father's Day coming this weekend. We need to keep the memory alive of the greatest generation, lest our nation forget the sacrifice they gave to keep us all free.
Looks like I'll be ordering an 8th Air Force knob, Dad was a Chief Armorer at Great Ashford with the 385th. Bob
Very cool after getting one of the HAMB knobs I had to see if he'd one for me . I was in the 2nd armuored div. Hell On Wheels was the motto. I can see myself collecting knobs. Roger
