Hey Fellas, Wanted to throw this out, just in case someone else gets in the same predicament. My Bro , (Mr Tomatohead), said I should make a post up. Saturday, I get a call from this random truck driver, he has a very thick southern accent, and a bit hard to fully understand. Claims I told him to call, if he ever came across any old cars for sale. Says he is near Dallas, it's pouring rain and he has a lady with 2 cars she wants to sell. (was in fact a huge thunderstorm, in Dallas, Saturday) In short one car is a 1932 Ford 3 window coupe for $1800, the other a 1967 Mustang GT 390 fastback, for $3200. He told me he was $265 short of the 5G's, to buy the cars and would I please wire him the money via Western Union. After which the lady would have the ***les notarized and he would load them on his car hauler and bring them to Orlando. Told him thanks for thinking of me and I did not want to offend him or call him sketchy, but was in no way sending him the money. Asked kindly if he could please take pictures(if he even knew how) and text them to me. At that point Jeff(Ramblur) was with me, so put the next call on speaker. The description of the cars sounded like he was standing inside a garage looking at them. Told him I would call him back. Which I did and said, I will be on a plane in the morning, to Dallas, with $5k cash, for the cars. He kept insisting on this wire transfer. Told him no again and to call me back. Sunday rolls around and as expected, nothing and I DID NOT call. Even though the thought of actually owning the Holy Grail of Hot Rods was spinning through my mind, I resisted, until Monday. Naturally, after two phone calls about 4 hours apart, went to voice mail. His area code (980) was from the middle of North Carolina. Yes, there many unanswered questions. And we all know, there are STILL cars sitting in barns and garages, waiting to be found. Not EVERYBODY, knows what they are. To plain and simple folks, they are just "old cars". What did he have to gain from simply making the sale happen??? Was he content with making the fees from the transport of them?? He kept telling me that, he had recently unloaded 2 cars and just had a VW Bug and a Motorcycle, on the transport, so he could load them up. Also said he had driven the Mustang and went almost 100mph. WTF??? OK, that's about it. Was dreaming of having a Duece 3 window, in my possesion and selling the Mustang, to make a healthy profit. Oh well. Be careful people, but don't be afraid to get on an airplane and check out a GOOD lead. If these jerks on TV can do it, so can we. PEACE, JT
Jakespeed; Did you get pics from him? Did you google his phone number? If he has a business ***le, did you google that? The "deal" might be real, but do a "background check" on the "broker" As the CIA says......"trust, buy verify through an independent source" Roger
Now now now.......I p***ed on a 32 5 window body with grill shell /doors / garnish moldings etc to my good pal who is a hamber for a measily 2300 dollars. And yes, it was on on Craigslist....
GTS225, No pictures. And yes I did an innternet search of the name he gave and his contact number. No trucking company info was ever divulged. Amazing how well he seem to describe a coupe that may have looked just like this. (THIS IS NOT THE CAR!)
Hey just check out the Chicago Motorama 1961 Cadillac Eldorado that Nads scored on Craigslist. Seller had NO idea what it was something extremely special. ******ed from Craigslist, here in Orlando. JT
Here's a tip to make sure you don't get scammed. Stay poor. If you spend all your money, then you have no money to steal.
I was looking at old Harley Davidsons the other day on line and found a restored 1930 flathead for $3000 with all paperwork, free shipping, and 90 day warrantee. owner will not take cash and let me pick it up, says I must wire money. think I should bite?
I'm looking for a replacement beater pickup truck and I've been seeing ads for grossly underpriced offers. I posted a thread about this same guy months ago. at that time he found a 32 and a hemi dodge charger.
mr. chevrolet, you have just put closure to this story. Thanks. ........Somewhere in Cleveland is Rodger Antonich's 5 window BBC coupe, with gold panel paint job. I lay awake at night dreaming of owning it, just like in the picture, from 1975? JT
I believe the expression is " If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is". We live is the worst of times for scams and fraud, just had a conversion w/ my banker about money, bank wire transfer, the only safe way to sell a car these days, interesting side note, was told even cash is a chance, huge amount of counter fit $100 bills out there.
ya'll gotta be smarter than that, right?? As soon as they say wire transfer it's a scam. Just move along.
