I built my first header today. I think it turned out pretty good, just a few questions. In a full turn it is about a inch and a half from the tire, is that to close? Are there any other problems you see? It would be easier to fix now than later. I think the hardest part was putting a round pipe in a square hole.

neat! The tire will probably survive....

How are you going to finish welding the tube sections together...are you going to cut the tack welds holding the tubes in the flange?

as long as your rolling your ok its sitting stopped for a long period you would be kind of at risk of tire BBq

Better than my first try for sure. Weld the tubes to the flange last.

I may be talking out of school but they really look good to me. I especially like the thick flange.

1 1/2" clearance is plenty - you are not likely to cook a tire at any time

They look good. The tire clearance won't be an issue.

Thanks for the kind words guys, once I started doing them it only took about 7 hours to get where I am at on them now. It was easier than I thought, and took a lot less time than I thought it would. I will post some pics of the passenger side when I get to it.
What kind of collector are you guys using these days. I would prefer to not use the 3 bolt flange style, but I haven't even looked yet. I would like something that seals nice and doesn't blow out gaskets.

  11. I like using S.S. V-Band clamps. Just a little spendy but never leak. They are built for Turbo's and seal with no gaskets. You can take them apart over and over and they still don't leak. You won't regret using them. If you go that way and don't know be sure to overlap seam by 1/8". Here is what they look like on the collector. A.M.X. Headers 002.jpg

I made some 4 bolt square flanges, but also drilled them for a 3 bolt pattern. You can still buy the 4 bolt gaskets, but I didn't find any flanges for sale. Kind of depends what look you're going for...if there is a bunch of high tech stuff on the car, then the ball or V band clamp would be good instead. 4 bolt flanges were pretty common in the 60s

Looks good to me, I'd say you have plenty of tire clearance . Where did you get the flanges from?

I believe from summit racing about 5 maybe 8 years ago. No high tech shit on this one, just a bunch of used parts I keep collecting. When I was younger I always had problems with the 3 bolt style. I like the clamp style, I will look into that. Thanks

The V-Band Clamps are Modern Hi Tech Shit! LOL (and yes they work very well, but are out of place on an old school car)

Where do you get a 4" collector to drop down to 2 1/4 pipe? The ball and socket style.

Here is the passenger side. I had to make it a little different than the driver side, because of the spare tire holder. Now I just. Eed to get the collector.
