received a PM conversation yesterday from maxv.v responding to my Wanted ad for a pair of Red's Headers for my 1932 Ford. he just joined yesterday as well. after asking me to email him, I received an email reply from him this morning stating he had them for sale ($125+ higher than retail from Red's) and would accept payment via Money gram as his PayPal is dormant. Wanted my shipping address. Didn't provide his shipping address tho. His name is Max Ventura and his email is maxventura487@outlook.com. Just posting for others to see and be cautious of this guy. I deleted his email without replying.
I love this place, the Mods have deleted this clown already. Great stuff, we are getting good at this, and less folks are getting ripped.
Same guy e-mailed me on my Wanted Ad for Steel Fenders (4) for 33-34 Ford Coupe, he said they were nice and wanted $400. shipping included. LOL. Same payment Requirements. W.T.F. Do these guys think we are all IDIOTS.
My opinion is that its too easy for someone to start a profile page and have it accepted...Ryan needs to have some question on it that anyone familar with the HAMB could answer,,,No answer to the question,no membership ..would stop one hell of a lot of spam tooo
He tried to sell me some hemi pushrods and I reported him as well. I agree with 'wbrw32', a 'smell test' of some sort would help.
It seems like a good thing to start a thread warning others, but the best move is to report them to a mod so they will be deleted.
I agree, but I think Ryan made mention to this in the past and for some reason it wasn't feasable. What question could be used? Many come here because of a Google search and find and OT thread that was locked, so they are trying to join for that, not traditional rod and customs.
Many folks read the HAMB without becoming members,so they should know answers to many different questions,,,Like'Who is the man behind this website?..or What is the purpose of the HAMB? If thats not feasible, make it mandatory that a person makes posting on the message board before being allowed to post to Cl***ifieds.
When I was looking for a gas tank for my oldsmobile here on the H.A.M.B. some guy Jffharrigan481@gmail.com said he had a nice clean one .When I asked for pictures of it he said he had trouble loading pictures but ***ured me it was good and clean.I then said ok I will come over and look at it and he disappeared after ask me to send him a western union money order, so be careful they are out there.Bruce.
When I am su****ious I check out some of the posts the person has made. Click on his name to see past posts. If he doesn't have a at least one post (ask him) that is a very bad sign. Click on his avatar, next click profile and then click postings. Charlie Stephens
Right! We have to do our own due diligence, just like we would in the world outside the HAMB. It helps to share info about these scammers though.
How's about : "No cl***ified posts unless you have at least 100 posts" or some such? I know that wouldn't have deterred me when I started here. I would think it would be an appropriate "Rite of p***age"
you can't be too careful- I got burned by an older guy on the freakin' Ford Barn- part arrived in a condition that wasn't even close to the description, ("couple 'a dings to straighten out, and it'll be ready for paint") and the pics I got looked OK because the back of the part had been painted flat black so you couldn't tell how boogered up it was. Fortunately it was a $150. lesson, not$1500. ( but I was still pretty pissed off). Like Willy sez "a good piece of rope, and a tall oak tree!"
I agree with Saxman: do your due diligence. We already have the tools we need to protect ourselves. We can read their posts to see if they are a legit car guy, and we can insist on paypal if we remain su****ious. No need to pester Ryan for additional nanny features.
Yes, as Saxman say's do your homework...however. This thread is about the obvious scammers, REPORT them immediatly after they answer your wanted add so their account will be deleted. The same guy/guys get deleted and then scans the wanted adds and joins, AGAIN, using a different user name to do the same again
What year is a Deuce, what firm gave us the flathead V8 or what made the 55 chevy so unique. 1932, Ford Motor Company and the Small Block Chevy. Or who made the Flathead ford one piece block possible, what is the cast iron wonder or what was the firstname/given name to Edelbrock senior? Charles Sorensen, the 1929 Chevy 181 straight six and Victor (vic). Just some ideas
I have noticed in many of the craigslist scams that are obvious from the start, the poster has a gmail e-mail address. I know, zillions of legitimate people use gmail, but that always causes me to be a little more careful.
The dormant Pay Pal thing is a sure as **** red flag. I'm pretty good as sniffing out the scammers and have bought lots of things here and at the Ford Barn.
I have purchased a bunch of stuff from fellow HAMBERs, the first thing I do is check their profile page, number of posts, topics etc. It's a pretty good indication of their intentions.
hi...i had max start a conversation with me...im looking for skinny slotmags...he wanted me to email him.. i replied to him but he never got back...im back on today checking my ad...and found this thread...so my thoughts were correct...he had never posted anything..."!!!ALARM BELLS!!!" cheers...al
I came across the H.A.M.B by way of google. It seems 8 out of 10 searches for anything hot rod related ended up here. After many many occasions of getting exactly the information I needed, I decided it was time to throw my hat in the ring and see if I could help out my fellow man. I've been on here roughly 6 months and I feel I've only just recently earned the right to post something up or sale. Although I'm well below the 100 mark (I ***ume, havnt looked). I'm still shocked by how much I have learned in such a short time. But that's another thread for another day. To the point (finally) I'm not buying anything from anyone who hasn't been here a while or never posted anything. I was considering becoming an alliance member. Partly for the cool firewall tag, but mostly for the credibility that (hopefully) comes with it. Although I have spoken personally with some long time trusted non alliance members I would have no issues doing business with. Tim
