A show car makes other people happy,,, My "Rat" makes me happy, screw everybody else! 'course mine's not even a rat yet,, but its mine!!

Found a big block and a four speed, not exactly what my 60 Bizqwik needs but I can't stomach the 6 banger and can't swing for a 348/409.

Ha. I get the same occasionally. Usually followed by: "How the hell can you build your own car? You actually build it all?" :)

To me, calling a car a rat rod is like calling someone an asshole.

Some people don't mind being called an asshole... some do.

To get off topic again, people forgot the most important French words.
    Ménage a’ Trois
At least I think it is French.

  11. You mean the most important word in French isn't "capitulate"?

Rat rod, go-kart, dune buggy, jalopy, building cars is about doing what you want, if you get too caught up with other people think is cool or that somebody who has no experience in rodding calls your car a rat, then you missed the point.

I'm new to this site and I wouldn't usually post in a discussion like this but some sally's on this board seem to be distracting from the awesome tech and helpfull chatter with all their ratrod whine, maybe they should save it for their hipster dress-up parties or start a new folder about why ratrods suck so other people don't have to read it.

Maybe, but I don't take myself seriously and thats the difference in my mind.

I saw you had a 50 Studie, my first car was a 51' Commander 8, I was 14 and mowed a thousand lawns in a summer to buy it. I wish I had it back, it would have made a sweet rat rod.

i get the rat rodder thing which is kinda funny since my car HAS shiny paint AND somewhat of an interior even if it is a homejob....but being so young the other question i get is "you're club's for people into EURO CARS,right..?" lol
    creepy

  18. This kind of statement annoys the shit out of me. The Free French Resistance in WW2 were some bad ass mothers. Perhaps you might try reading instead of listening to talk radio, my friend. Ignorance is not something to flaunt.

No I'm not of French decent, Cherokee, Irish and German. But you've made a dumber comment than calling someone's primered car a rat rod.

Maybe you should do a little more reading yourself. Fact is, the French police were more than happy to round up as many jews and "undesirables" as they could find and ship them off to concentration camps. Bart Simpson got it right when he referred to them as a bunch of "cheese eating surrender monkeys."

  21. Thank you 392_hemi. I stand behind my "annoying statement". Members of the French police and many in the miltary were Nazi sympathizers and co-operated, if not downright supported the fascist regimes in Germany and Italy.

Chili Phil you have a very good point nad I agree with you on the Resistance. Many of the French people were brave and made great sacrifices to resist and drive the Nazis out, but they were sold out by their government. I won't get into the whole political thing as this isn't the forum but I've very little respect for the French government. Then and now. We've bailed their butts out three time now.

For the record, I'm of strong German descent.

BTW - It was Groundskeeper Willy that called them that politically incorrect but oh-so-on-target name when he was teaching French class during the teacher's strike.

What kills me is that if you build it yourself in a garage and have to hammer the hell out of it to get all the parts to line up you just built a rat rod.

However, if you have your own shop, TV shop, or tool endorsement deal and you have to hammer the hell out of it to get all the parts to line up, you are readjusting due to paint and polish, and it's called a high-end custom.

  24. Ha...that's funny..I like it.

Just my $.02--- as far as the term Rat Rod goes....I don't care either way, but what bothers me is the origin...Now, I always thought in hot rod terms a Rat Rod was a low buck, primered or not painted, bare bones rod- period. But, I think the term was actually adopted from the biker world and the term "Rat bike". Now here's the problem, you ever see what was being called a Rat Bike in an old Easyrider or In the Wind? Generally they were old Harleys, ridden by "eccentric" characters, that were beat to hell, with skulls and rubber rats, boda bags, dream catchers and every other piece of crap-what else hanging off 'em!

    See: Pack Rat
    See: Rat's nest

Here-in lies the problem, as I see it. I've been starting to see this carried over to our hobby. Fake Hemi valve cover made from sheet stock and spray painted "HEMI", resin skulls mounted on roofs. See: ART CARS See: Burning Man

I think is where the distain for the term is coming from from hotrodders and, unfortunately, the (mis) understanding of the term is coming to "people not in the hobby".

I guess we need to edumacate our office mates...is what I'm trying to say

Or get a cool name for them deep fried potatoes, Mmm hmm..

    I like the term Jalopy!

    We are all Jalopyist.
    We study Jalopeology.
    Our religeon is Jalopyism.
Our cars have a Jalopiesque look to them.

This is much better sounding than rat rod!
