getting ready to weld motor mounts in model A. the motor doesnt look to be sitting rite. do i take level from top of block or the inlet of the manifold. the mounts are flush with top of frame rail. my thinking is the trans mount sits to high.

Ordinarily, with the ch***is at ride height (or same angle as will be), the engine is placed with the carb mounting flange level.

That ****** mount is a little 'elevated'. Engine, transmission and rear end (pinion center) are all relative when setting engine and trans.

Your trans mount is way to high for whatever reason. Gary:rolleyes:

  8. This is the only pic I have available right now, but your entire engine and trans are really high up and they dont look like they need to be, the bottom of my exhaust ports are above the top of my frame about half an inch at the rearmost port, engine sits 3-4 degrees relative the frame and carbs are level relative the ground. my transmission is not above the top of the frame rails.

I built a ch***is nearly the same as yours. I put the front mounts just below the level of the top frame rail, or about 3/8 to 1/2 below yours. My trans was the same, bolted to a removable center piece welded to the bottom frame rail. About five inches below yours. PM me for more if you need to.

Not sure by pics if you have frame sitting at roughly ride height but it will alter any angles on engine

If your frame is to be level at ride height, as you have it sitting in the picks, then the engine needs a significant angle adjustment, down at back.. If you are going to have a rake to the frame, then even more
lowering of the rear of the eng/trans would be in order.

  17. I'll second what everybody said - the engine is at least 3+" too high. Also, I saw you had one level on the carb flange - which appears to be angled on your manifold. I would put my level on the intake manifold (top of block) surface and I think you'd want it to be either level to the ground (as you show it), or slightly angled down toward the rear.

Personally, I like the engine to be as low as it can be in the frame - keeping in mind the radiator hoses (lower ones will be below the top of the front cross-member) and how much pan clearance you need.

Do remember that carb flange is parallel to crank on '32-48 and angled on '49-53. On a rod of couse you can mix and match, and anecdotally no one has ever noticed any problems using the wrong angle in an engine swap on Fords that had flatheads stock...
I think that proper answer for you is to keep engine on stock Model A axis at crank...at front p*** a rod through stock upper spring mount part that has the bearing for hand crank (or your best visual approximation of where this would be) and align it with crank center. In back...it looks like your crossmember is way high, can it go down at mount? Looks like whole trans will live upstairs with the people!
