Hello I was wondering if anyone knows the rarity or the production numbers of a 1963 galaxie fastback 390 4 speed car. Any help would be appreciated.

Check with the Galaxie club owners.

  3. I would think it is somewhat rare as most people wanting this car with a 4 speed would have gone for a 406 or 427.

  7. My first new car was a 63 Ford Galaxie 500, 390, 4-speed, black convertible, it had no performance at all.

Bought it tonight. Was actually a 64 instead of a 63.

  9. One drawback to ordering the 427 (the 406 was gone by '64) was that Ford wouldn't install either power brakes or steering with that motor (or A/C), so many dealers p***ed on the option. Nearly all were special ordered by customers who knew what they were getting (and not getting). 390/4-speed cars could be had with all creature comforts...

Oh, a '64. Well in that case, I have one of those. Pretty much the same as a '63. Mine is a 390, bench-seat, four-speed . Nice running, driving car. Fun to own. Not all that rare, but I haven't seen another one coming the other way in a long, long time. Wish it was a 427, but it is what it is. A set of headers makes a big difference on these as the original manifolds are ridiculously restrictive! IMG_0683.JPG

A good friend of mine from Ashley, In. bought a new 63' Galaxie fastback with hi po 390, solid lifter cam, tuned cast iron headers, four speed, Detroit locker and it ran very well. Drove it many times.

Around 1970 I knew a guy that had a 406/tri-power/4 speed car, blew the clutch and flywheel after waaay too many street "antics", took out the back of the block.

Probably a lot rarer now than back when it was new. I recall it being a popular combo for Ford fans. The 390 was probably Fords most popular engine at the time. The 4 speed was the option that made it special.

When I got out of HS in 65 I bought a 62 Ford Galaxy... bench seat, 4 speed, 390 with solid lifters, it had a Holley 4 barrel..No power equipment.. I had no trouble tearing up the T10 and the rear differential...And the 327- 300 4 speeds and Mopar 383's were faster...

  16. The Hi Po 390 was a cool set up, sounded great but I never drove one, I'm sure they ran pretty well, also, my brother lived in the big town of Ashley, IN, small world.

27' Graham, what was his name? Lived there on two different occasions.

  18. I know one thing, they were heavy. I bought a new 427 the minute they came out. Took it to the drags and it weighed in at 4050#. The 427's did have a lot heavier suspension though. Mine sat about 2" higher than a 390 powered car.

I had this 289/ Cruise-O-Matic version in my miss-spent youth. One of my favorite cars that I've ever owned.

  26. @lothiandon1940 I have owned a couple of Galaxies over the years, never owned one that was not an FE car. Never owned a 427 car either, but a couple of 390 cars and a 352 car. They were nice cars and even if you owned one that was not a "power house" they were still nice cars. There is just something about cruising an early '60s Galaxie.

I did own a 63 fairlane small block car once, I told everyone it was a baby galaxie. :D

  28. Uncle had a new '64 500 289 auto. First car I ever drove on the road. Think I was 12 or 13. Had a really cool a/m radio with a factory reverb. Use to listen to it as much as I could.
