Projects 1956 Cadillac 62 Door Panels

Hey People,

Have been keeping up with 55Caddy62's thread about the 1951 Cadillac Series 62 Build. Cool read.
I tried posting this on the Cadillac site but got not responses. Figured I would try here.
I have been staring at the door panels on my 1956 Cadillac and cannot figure out how to get them off. I have removed every screw I have found. The panel is metal so there is no pushing it out of the way to get my tool in there to remove the clips holding the handle and vent window crank off. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

There is a specific tool for clip removal that fits lots of doors. Sometimes you can work a shop towel or dishrag in between the panel and bezel and use it to catch and remove the wire clip.

 

The handle bezels aren't spring loaded by chance are they? Like a '40's Ford?

Push on the part right behind the handle , the smallest part of the bezel. The clip is right there . They should come in from the round side not the long side.

 

The handle bezels are spring loaded. You can push them back and then be able to get to the clips. Get yourself a cheap set of the proper tools from harbor freight. The door panel itself is held on by what looks like a board tack every couple of inches around the outside. They are blind tabs that hold it to the door, very carefully pry the door card away from the door. Go gently or you will rip the pins out of the fitting on the door card, ask me how I know!!

 

Thanks Guys for the replies. Unfortunately if you look at the pictures, the part right behind the door handle and window crank is metal and does not push, bend, enough to get the tool I have to get to the clips.

 

If you examine the escutchon closely you will see that it does indeed collapse enough to get e tool in there,,,JUST PUSH THE OUTER HALF IN TOWARDS THE DOOR...You will then see the clip in the handle...
TRUE,,,it is all metal..but outer half will push inwards.

 

Hey Steve, I don't have a 51 Caddy or my own build thread.
I believe that's an @bockford project.

 

The escutcheon just may be stuck...they sometimes do that but push on the outer one a lot and it'll eventually come loose. There is a U-shaped clip holding the door handles and window cranks on.

aldixie and wbrw32 are correct about how the panels come off, however, those panels are 60 years old, do NOT expect every one of those "tacks" to come out...they'll break out of the cardboard panels...
