Hello, Mine name is Eric. I have been a Hamber for a while now but I just bought a 56 Ranch Wagon. Been doing alot of research and it seems all roads lead here . Been a Ford guy my whole life so this forum is a no brainer to me.
Will put up pics as soon as I figure out how. I am pulling the 223 right now and putting in a 292 built by the Y Block guy. Hope to have that done soon. After that will be a T5 maybe this winter and thats about it. Maybe a brake upgrade. I have been trying to find out the details on a self adjusting conversion for the rears.
Got a valid carby on the six? On brakes: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/self-adjusting-brakes-for-a-54.899224/#post-10196463
The six has a rebuilt 1904 with gl*** bowl on it. I also converted the distributor to mechanical/vacuum advance with an Ignitor II. Didnt help it much since after I spent all that $ I found out the compression is way low and has a bad valve on one cyl.
When we have done these self adjusting conversions in the past we cross reference the shoes to a later car that uses the same part number shoe to get the adjuster kit and matching hardware kit,in your case you would want the hardware and adjuster kits for a 1966 F-100 front drums which uses the same 228 11" X 2" shoes as your '56 rears.
Thanks! I was trying to cross reference on Rock Auto and couldn't get any traction. That's a big relief. Are the shoes a direct fit also or should I stick with the 56 shoes?
Both the shoes are same part number 228's, if your existing shoes are OK you can use them but Advance Auto is now listing Ceramic lined shoes these will fade a lot less and save on drum wear. That way you could tell the counter guy you need the hardware kits, and self adjuster kits and shoes for a 1966 F-100 and he won't get weird on you if you mention 1956.
Thanks. I know what you mean about the funny looks when you say 56 Ford Ranch Wagon. There eyes tend to glaze over and start to drool a little. I will need shoes as I have a leaking wheel cyl. I think I will try the ceramic.
