Rather than going in to Chicago and trying to negotiate traffic in a 5,200 lb. car we have decided to start our return leg on 66 in Joliet.

I know that if I don't start at the sign in Chicago , I will forever regret it , so I've gotta brave the traffic. I'll be happy to be through that part of the trip and on with the more enjoyable stuff , but I don't want to feel that I cheated myself. It's not like it's right around the corner to try again. Besides , a Shoebox Ford doesn't weigh that much , so I'm good ... Right ?? ;)

You should be able to slide right through, my Caddy is as wide as a city bus and half as long. Built for the open road.

  8. We are leaving from So Cal to go to the route 66 Mother Road Show in Springfield Il on Sept 14. We went last year but towed our car, this year we are driving. Bought some route 66 maps that are very detailed so plan on taking our time. Been through all the stops in Ca, Az and New Mexico so we are going to concentrate on Kansas, Ok, Mo and Il. We plan to hit two car shows on the way......

That is something to chuckle about. I'll have to ask my friend if he knows where that sign is. He traveled that road daily from Yucca Valley for several years when they were building I-40. His told me his V-8 powered Vega had 400,000 miles on it.

And just where were you headed on those 50 trips? Ludlow?

I owned a car lot in Lake Havasu City, and I'd bring vehicles over from Southern California, to sell.
