Pardon me, I'm new to this thread, so please bare with me. Years ago, I purchased a 64 Galaxie Fastback with a 390. The previous owner mounted 2 Smitty's all the way to the rear and just added chrome tips on the ends. That car was the very quite in side the car. But the sound coming out the back had a nice rumble. Now up dating today, I have a 47 Plymouth P15 and looking to have sort of the same affect that the Ford. (Quite Inside) (Nice sound out back). Looking for some thoughts and maybe other ideas that some of might share.
The 64 Ford had the stock mufflers, which were approximately 8" round and 30" or so long muffler mounted at the very end of the exhaust pipe, which usually left about a 6" tailpipe. Gl***paks or Steelpaks will reverberate any place you put them. If they are under the car then that vibration gets transmitted up thru the floor into the car, You can cut down on the rumble with a lot of sound deadener under the carpet. The only place you can put them and minimize the Noise is where they were on the 64. at the extreme rear of the car..... factory engineers are pretty smart at times.... the 390 will make a deep sound, hard to replicate with a smaller motor. also, the Galaxie had a LARGE trunk, which put the mufflers quite a ways away from the p***engers compartment and acted as a sound deadening chamber, Not an option with your plymouth. No matter where you put them on the plymouth you are going to get inside rumble. outside you can make them sound as loud as you want. the bigger the 'pak' the mellowere it will be.
