yes but may drop your compression a little probably 64 cc heads versus the 283 58 cc heads but it should work just fine.
Bore it out to 4", find some used Z-28 pistons and build your self a a screamer. Those 1.94 heads are just the ticket for that combo. Frank
I called a machine shop in wendel NC and asked about that. How much it would cost and all. He said around 2grand to bore the block. Is that about right?
I found that the 305 heads with the 1.94s and small combustion chambers really wake up 283s and 307s.I put a set of these 305 heads on a 307 with a mild cam and 4bbl and it screamed!307s aint supposed to run like that!hehehe
2 grand to bore the block? Ummm, no. Try roughly $150 tops, and that's doing it right. 2 grand to have someone build a complete motor, maybe.
Actually, the 305 4bbl heads have 1.84 intake valves, and they are a nice size to use in 283 powerpack heads once you open up the valve pockets.
This thread is really giving some good info. I'm trying to decide what to do with my 283 and you guys are really giving the info I need. Thanks.
i've got fuelie heads on my wittle 283.2.02 is a squeeze, and the valve is shrouded by the cyl wall.the lower end flow is less than optimal, and bottom end suffers.if your intentions are a street motor..dont bother.if you wanna tach that little zinger off the top,go for it.i'm talkin 8500rpm plus.my last 283 had 2.02 valve, and only started making power at 5500.underneath.it was a turd.but over that,it was a beast.it also had a 270 @.050 duration cam with 96 lobe sep.didnt idle well either.hehe..like 1000 rpm barely!a good flowing camelhump head with a 1.94 is likely your best bet,or a nice power pack head does er good.
