Good choice. Somewhere I heard that Jerry was planning a clone. I Hope the bro's in Hutch add the original lettering back. It was gold leaf, ya know? Did you talk to Jerry?
Several years ago,I bought a box of license plates at an estate auction. When I got them out to my Xterra,lo and behold,an old aluminum club plate from Carls Speed Shop.I've been interested ever since. Here is the thread: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/carls-speed-shop-kcmo.405876/
The "Engle Cams" decal IMO has been always a favorite of mine. It is a reminder of the '60s drag racing scene. And to run a quickchange puts this one into the late '50s. Very nice car - good workmanship!
My friend Luke is currently running a late model car in brackets and things like "Fun Ford" events. All the talk of racing sort of gets the grease on my heels slippery again, just when I thought I was over it. "So what would you build?" he asked. Something akin to this feature car is EXACTLY what I'd build. I probably wouldn't build a QC for it, might use something newer than a 37 axle for the front (considering the load on it after the stripe), and it would surely be Chevy powered be it SBC or BBC. Now this has to pop up and distract my brain even more. Dammit Joey!! (and I mean that in the right way). I can see mine in candy apple red with a white tonneau insert.
The original was destroyed in a barn fire along with several Corvettes. Jerry has already built the clone. It is in his shop in Los Lunas, NM. Has a couple of minor tweaks to get it on the road again. Jerry is now in his 80's and doesn't get out into the shop much. I will try to get some current pix of the car. It does have the Carls Speed Shop graphics and the famous "222". Currently runs a BBC.
Thanks, Bud. SOOO much great stuff goin' on, and so many great guys reporting on it! Tight knit bunch, the 'primary fabric' of the HAMB...
Very cool old Kansas hot rod....One that I can recall from my old days when I lived in Kansas. I think it was the very first deuce roadster I ever put eyes on as there just were not that many around Kansas. Thanks for posting this story.
I visited Jerry today and took some pix of the clone 222. I will attach some here. Light in shop was not good and door was blocked, so car could not be rolled outside. One pic has Jerry standing by car. It now has a 468 cube BBC. Jerry has not driven it in more than 5 years.
I was a 20 year old kid in late 67-68 ,a member of the SRCA out of Great Bend, Ks. I can remember Dean Wheeler leaving the line at 10 grand. It would scream!!!!!! Needless to say it was impressive. I think that's when my affliction with 32 Ford Roadsters began.
Wow, that's a Great tribute! This man has Great vision and style as well as some Great toys. Anybody notice the polished cranks (future projects)? The 222 leaving the line at 10G's must have been something awesome!
