Speedy Bills collection has been on my "Bucket List" for a long time now. Call ahead to be sure the collection is open. Take some photos and post them. Bob
Thanks for posting the link to the collection 2racer! Just went through the photo collection of all the engines, the D.O Green I once owned sure has the proper home now. Bob
If you like airplanes, head down I-80 to Ashland, Ne. (half way between Omaha and Lincoln) to the Strategic Air Command Museum and prepare to spend a day. Every fighter, bomber and transport plane from WWII to today under one roof the size of 3 football fields. You walk into the place with an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane coming right at you from above. While you're in the vicinity, go to Mahoney State Park and get lunch. Lots of other stuff nearby, too.
My "car council book" shows a few things to see. There are cruises which consist of driving to a parking lot where hotrodders/custom enthusiasts and street machiners park and check each other's rides out. Tuesdays: Culvers, [burger joint] 14th and Old Cheney road-Lincoln Wednesdays: Flashbacks....[bar] 3015 S. 83rd plaza, Omaha...5:30 to about 8 or 8:30..I like this one and attend almost every week.. Wednesdays.....Keystone Center...7821 Military ave 4th Wednesday of each month.....Don and Millie's 5200 S.56th st...Lincoln Thursdays....Bushwacker's Saloon show 'n shine....7401 Main st....Ralston [part of Omaha] 5pm to 9 Thursdays.....Quaker steak and lube....council Bluffs, Iowa...just across the river [about 10 minutes] from Omaha Fridays.........Culvers..north 27th St...Lincoln Fridays....Don and Millie's .....[a burger joint] at 144th and Harrison street...Omaha. Fridays...Walmart, 8700 Andermatt drive, Lincoln [never tried tried this one] Here's another one I've never attended: First and 3rd friday of each month: Dinner cruise, parking lot at 132nd street and west center road..leaves promptly at 6:30. Contact rkolb@centurylink.net Might be fun! There's also a new one...a "dodge street cruise" in the parking lot behind the Sonic at 76th and Dodge...Omaha. it's Saturday nite.:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hambers-at-omahas-dodge-street-cruise.948775/ and if you like tourist-trappy kinda stuff, chack out the old market in Omaha any day. Lots of bistro places, little shops, drinking establisments and old city charm. The action picks up after dark.
There is a really cool 56 Ford race car at Speedy Bill's museum that I spent a half hour looking at. So much to see there. If you can't find other car things to do I'm sure there's a corn eating contest you can enter...
My buddy called Speedway regarding hours at the museum---8am-12, M-F. No Sat or Sun hours. Wouldn't hurt to check this out, it could be the hours for the old Muse theater in Omaha.
thanks for the info will be there all week,my daughter's competing in the state games of America. Will be sure to check out some of the happenings.
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo is I believe has been rated the second best zoo in the US (right after the San Diego Zoo, no it's not car related but it might be something that your traveling companions might want to see. I've been there a couple of times and your legs will be tired just like going to a good car show or swap meet. http://www.omahazoo.com/
There's a benefit car show being held at Joslyn Castle at 39th and Davenport Streets in Omaha on Sunday, July 26th late morning-late afternoon http://joslyncastle.com/carclassic/ . If you want to see around 70 cars from the '20s through the '70s and a few newer ones, stroll around a neat old mansion and grounds with lots of shade and do some beer tasting, check it out. I'll warn you upfront that tickets are $12.50 at the gate, it's primarily original/restored cars with no modifieds (but a few did sneak in under the radar), and there will be a LOT of HAMB-friendly '30s-mid-'60s rides, real heavy on '50s-early '60s iron (hey, I'm the chair this year and I can steer a committee pretty well). And since my buddy Rocky gave it a plug, go to www.enwicc.com and click on the menu link for the Calendar of Events list of shows and other car events http://www.enwicc.com/ENWICC_Directory_Events_2015b.html . There are some other shows in the Omaha and Lincoln area on Saturday and Sunday you can check out depending on how far you want to drive or can plan ahead.
Forgot another interesting stop, the Great Plains Wing Commemorative Air Force Museum located at the Council Bluffs Airport (the airport's north approach is right behind me. They have a WWII trainer, a P51 Mustang and a really nice small museum. They had a WWII bomber there last year or the year before so a neighbor and I trekked up there since it was only a couple of miles away, I was surprised and amazed at what they had. We were fortunate to have one of the guys that worked on the artifacts (engines in his case) give us a tour, it was free and interesting. http://www.traveliowa.com/aspx/dest.aspx?id=6662
