Just heard Bill Lattin spent the morning on the salt. All they could find was 2 1/4 miles
of safe course. Bonneville is cancelled. Richard

If the BLM had put as much effort into saving the salt as the government has put in to saving the Snail Darter they're be races in August. After viewing the above video it's not hard to see where their priorities are. Might be the end of an era?

Damn. I was looking forward to a road trip!

  14. Let's hope it's just a hiccup in the weather/geography systems, and it will settle back in for some good salt.
In the meantime, support Save the Salt and other programs, and write letters to our political leaders.

Mazooma it's good to see you posting again, hope you're doing well, and thanks for the
video. I think you guys are right on with "Save The Salt". The last time I spoke with Otto
Ryssman he had the same concerns. He told me when he started running Bonneville in the
early 50's you could drive a stake down in the salt one foot, and you couldn't move it from
side to side. Now the salt is about three inches thick or so. All I can think is corporate greed.
As far as our recent weather patterns go it might be time to move Speed Week accordingly.

Makes BLM sound like an oxy*****.....Here's a solution for the left coasters, that solves the water woes, but your cost of water will go up, and you'd still need to keep bad guys like Tom Selleck from stealing it too.
Build those big desalinazation plants on the Pacific Coast, truck the by-product from the LA basin back to the great salt lake, and start spreading it.

Or build the seconds largest pipeline from the Pacific to the Great Salt Lake, boil off and condense the water at the salt lake and build the worlds third largest pipline to get the water back to LA.

Or if you're some billionaire millenial lets deploy drones, or build a vacuum shipping tunnel....

In all seriousness I hope a reasonable solution is found to save the this natural resource.

That's too bad. My son and I have been looking forward to going. Neither of us has ever been there. Maybe next year. As we have vacation time lined up, what else is going on around Utah & New Mexico that week? Anything car related? Like drag races, dirt circle tracks, motorcycle stuff, airplane fly in's...anything for a motorhead to attend?

    Thanks,

The world doesn't end at Bonneville. For us right coasters it's just do damn far and expensive. Loring Timing ***ociation in northern Maine has a paved track with 1-1/2 miles of acceleration. Speeds in excess of 250 mph from the fastest bikes and cars. Both Ohio and Texas have one mile paved tracks.
The future of lSR is going to be paved tracks...plenty of space out west, find it, pave it, they will come...

  25. Very sad for many who come from overseas, as the expense and effort is great, Especially those with race vehicles.

kiwijeff......You have that so right. All the people I have met in the years I have been going that are from across the pond are some of the greatest hot rodders. They put a lot of $$$ and effort into this once a year event. My guess is with this being the second year in a row with NO RACING we will lose a lot of these people.

Really ****s, was looking forward to it again this year. Since it is cancelled now before heading out, this will be the first time for me in 13 years that I will not be at Bonneville for Speedweek. Yes, last year I was there and without racing to watch, but still saw some friends and racecars.

Between the weather and the salt reduction, this may be something we have to deal with each year. Hopefully the salt surface can recover some for future years.

I hear ya there. It's kind of like Sturgis if the bike rally ended. This is when people make the bulk of their money for the year.

Yes be sad for the event cancelled.
But get mad, go to the Save the Salt web site to see what 'the little guys' can do by contacting Congress Persons, both in Utah and the Federal Government. A bunch of little guys banded together can do a lot. Where would Traditional Rodders be without a little guy and a blog site called HAMB?

Years ago this was true. In 1980 I set the **O/GAlt record on Saturday. This was in the days of 3 runs to set a record and two way runs in the morning. So the meet was over on Friday except for those who qualified on Friday. We ran Saturday morning and then they picked up and went home. I stopped at the Western Grill on the way out. Pretty much the only place to eat then. Gone now. Asked the lady if she was glad when we left and things got back to normal. She answered "Hon, when you guys leave, it's back to swatting flies for something to do." They got plenty to do these days. I am sure the Motels in Wendover like having us. But the money is in West Wendover in the casinos. And they don't miss us at all. Things changed a lot when the town split into two towns.
