I cant seem to find a repop latch ***embly so I was wondering if anybody had rebuilt their latch ***embly. The issue I am having is the door latches fine but as I drive down to road the latch ***embly unlatches. It does no unlatch all the was just off enough the door rattles as if I didn't shut it hard enough. the springs are all complete nothing is broke. The latch seems tired if that makes sense. The return spring doesn't return firmly. I have cleaned and lubed the ***embly. The door remains shut. The doors are shaved. I do not wish to put on bear claw latches. Thanks in advance.
If you decide you need parts, try finding a junkyard latch from a rear door of a 4 door. In theory they would have seen a lot less use, as somebody would always be using the driver's door but not so much for the rear.
You might try adjusting the striker on the door post. It is possible the door latch is too tight and doesn't fully latch on the second catch. A little body shake and it comes undone. Not saying that is certain, but possible, and worth checking into. Ray
I'm pretty sure that National Chevy ***ociation has repro door latches for your car - I have a 50 Pontiac that uses the same latch ***embly and found one of mine had the small stainless piece (like a very small piece of angle iron) missing and the latch on the body couldn't close completely.
What Hnstray said , move the latch on the post to the outside, not in. When you shut the doors you should hear click click.
Have you inspected the latch itself ? check the springs, they could be weak or broken, also check the strikers in the body for misalignment. HRP
This is about 95% of all old chevy latch problems....LOOSEN the stiker plate a little.that will let the latch fall completly into place...
