TH 400. No dipstick tube. How much fluid should there be in relation to the hole where the tube would normally be? Is there another option than a tube?
a cork! ?? putting all seriousness aside.....I can measure a tube and dipstick on one in my shop and give you a 'full' measurement related to outside of case were the tube seats. Won't be in the next hour or two.....I'm not at my shop today.....but will get to it. Beautiful Olds! Ray
1 3/8 inch from where the tube seats to the add mark and 9/16 up from there is the full mark It is recommended to run them on the add mark when worm
What I've found to be the best way to fill when you have an unreliable indication is pull the modulator valve, when fluid starts to run out, put the valve back in.
Anyone know the answer to this when talking about a 727? I've got a clutchflite that i'm wanting to use, but it has 4 inches of plumbing pipe with a cap on it instead of the dipstick- haven't opened it up yet to see how that pipe is attached.... -rick
I have use this set up on PG for dirt track cars I weld a steal rod to the pipe cap with a notch that sticks down the pipe for the full mark.

not sure what you mean by "panic" shift, but if you have the kickdown wired up, and hold the pedal down, it will generally shift around 4500. Unless you have a high perf trans, like they used to put in the higher HP vettes...they shift around 5500 or so
If you put it in 1st and hold the pedal down it will shift into 2nd automatically at around 4500. To my knowledge th400's have that "panic" shift feature.. I may be wrong..
grind a flat on the 1-2 shift valve, and plug a hole in the valve body housing. the Trans Go kit comes with a modified shift valve
I could be wrong but I think our company had 1986 3/4 ton pick ups with TH 400s back then. I got in a discussion with one of my subordinates while he was driving (I was riding shotgun) about truck abuse and the subject came up about throwing the truck in reverse at 60 MPH. He said it wouldn't do anything. I wondered how he found that out.
