Technical Muffler Placement on Flathead Merc

I have been searching for a SIMPLE answer, not a long dissertation on muffler placement. Will steelpack mufflers be quieter mounted forward or back on my flathead Mercury?

 

I don't think it makes much difference, Maybe a little quieter farther back. Steel packs are louder than gl*** packs. I recommend Brockman Mellow tone mufflers. Go to the Brockmancustomparts.com web site and give them a call. Good people to work with and will answer all your questions and concerns.

 

From my experience (not flattys) further back is quieter. the longer the pipe and more bends will also quiet it down.
Gl*** packs right at the headers and 4 foot of pipe to a 90 degree bend and dump was much louder than bringing the packs back about 2 foot and running the pipes out the back of the truck, Same motor, same headers.

 

I'm considering 17" Brockman Steelpacks (24" oal). I'm wondering if they'd be too loud. Any thoughts?

 

I just put a Brockman Mellowtone on my '49 Lincoln Flatty with stock setup about halfway back, sounds great!!! ps folks a Brockman are A+

 

the 17 / 24 was what they recommended so thats what I went with.
