Preparing to remove 272 from my Sunliner and got curious about this tag. It is a paper type material with the letter C stamped in the top, and 113 across the lower area. Anyone have a thought about such a tag. This engine appears to have not been messed with before. Everything on this car seem to be original. 100_9234.JPG

I have the same tag on my 56with 292 but I think mine has some sort of numbers on it. I don't exactly remember right now.

My 54 239 had it mounted the timing cover also. Must have been a factory ID

Thanks for your responses, kind of figured it was common.

Engine ***embly tag - "C" stands for Cleveland Engine ***embly Plant; the number would be an ID that Ford used internally for the engine size and head/manifold combination. To refresh my memory, what were the engine ***embly plants aside from Cleveland (C)/Cleveland 1 (C1)/Cleveland 2 (C2), Dearborn (D), Windsor (W) and Lima (L) back in the day?

I've seen tags like that on an unrestored '55 Customline with a 223 and an unrestored '61 T-bird 390 (very rare to find them in any condition, though). I've been wanting to get a list of what numbers were used and on what they corresponded with. Some start with numbers, others with a letter followed by a 3-digit number - I think that started in the early '60s.

So, by extension, who can add to the list if the 272-4v was 113? What engine plants/numbers were used on the following? If you can add to this list, please do!
    I-6 223-1v - 150 (seen on '55 Customline, no engine plant ID - where were 223s made/***embled?)
    V8 239-2v - ?
    V8 272-2v - ? (?- Trans/HP?)
    V8 272-4v - C/113 ('55 Ford w/AT)
    V8 272-4v - ? ('55 Ford w/ ST/OD)
    V8 292-2v - ?
    V8 292-4v - C1/23 ('56 Ford w/AT); C1/119 (? - repop sold by T-bird vendors - isn't even correct type/color of cardboard) (?-Std Trans or Auto Trans? Different heads depending on trans)
    V8 312-4v - ?
    V8 312-8v - ?
    V8 312-4v w/Supercharger - ?
    V8 332-2v - ?
    V8 352-2v -
    V8 352-4v 300 hp - D/B6 ('58 T-bird), D/B431, D/D21, D/564 ('59-'60 T-bird) (Need to verify ltr before #)
    V8 352-4v 360 hp - ? (1960 Hipo)
    V8 430-4v 340 hp - C1 ('59 T-bird)
    V8 390-4v 300 hp (1961-1962) - D/B842 is known

Ford went to a self-adhesive paper tag, which also included the initial timing setting, starting in 1963-64 that was placed either on the lower front of the surge tanks of FEs (if the engine used one) or on the front face of a cylinder head or valve cover of small-blocks, or sometimes on the coil bracket.

I'll have to take a look at mine this weekend and get back with what I have.

    V8 272-2v - C/113 ('55 Ford in the above example) (it is a 2v, right? Transmission AT or ST/OD?)
It is a teapot four barrel with auto trans.

Thanks - edited post to update/correct. Hopefully more people can chime in with what they've found.

My tag has C1 and then below it a large 23.
    My car has a 292 - 4V and automatic.

I've tried to look up any info on these tags and so far nothing. Many old Ford pat suppliers sell the same repop version with C1 and 119, listed above in Yutan's post which would not be correct for every Ford engine.
