If you are talking about a basically stock ch***is, Ford made everything you need for both ends (used on some 1947 and 1948 Fords), and your frame is pretty likely already drilled as needed. That stuff is getting harder to find, but these HAMBers http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/fordbanjo-tube-shock-mounts-model-a-48.923199/ Make the only part that's hard. aside from that, you mostly need a drill and some long bolts.
His frame should have the HOLES, not the shocks. I think most '46's do. Ford started installing tube shocks in 1947, and not all '48's even got them. All the parts actually had '46 part numbers and I think they started drilling the holes considerably before the hardware arrived at the plants. The stuff needed included the bracket bolted to backing plate bolts at back and long studs that went through crossmember at rear, in front there were simple upper brackets that bolted into the old type shock holes and studs through the ends of the front axle. Front axle for tube shocks actually had forged bosses where the studs went through, but the '46 type is plenty stout to just have the holes drilled through.
Thanks guys, My 46 has lever shocks in the back, someone already put tube shocks in the front. I like the setup from CG. I don't want to buy two or three sets of shocks to find the ones that work the best. Now I just hope I can get my rear drums off with out a struggle! Rich
