Ok guys... I'm struggling here for the first time a starter problem is kicking my ****. It's on a 250 straight 6. Problem is that with the starter off the vehicle it engages and spins just fine but when on the engine it won't spin at all or barely turns the engine. I can push start the engine just fine. I'm lost now.. any help is appreciated.

Be sure the engine is well grounded to the ch***is using a cable, and the battery too. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Same as above - check for good power and ground feeds - not with a meter but break it apart and make sure the connections are clean. If the wire is old, it may be time to try a new wire since corrosion can increase the voltage drop between battery and starter.

is this a Ford or Chevy engine we're talking about? they both made a 250, you know.

But yeah, check the battery condition, and if you can, measure what the voltage is at the battery while it's trying to crank.

Sorry guys.. it's a Chevy 250. I replaced all the power cables and checked the ground straps and all are good. I shimed the starter and kinda spun over better but still slow.. possibly more shims? It's driving me crazy..

Before you mess with shims, you need to check the clearance between the starter shaft and the ring gear teeth. 1/8" allen wrench should fit between them but not turn.

If it's a shim problem, it will sound bad, like grinding.
