Is the transmission bolt pattern the same on a 2nd gen 55 GMC V8 as it is on a later small block chevy? The GMC looks like a Pontiac engine.

That's because it is a Pontiac engine, and no, the pattern is not the same.

Okay, thanks gimpyshotrods. I was afraid of that. So what is the best way to get the old girl running again, SBC and turbo 350 or just put a Pontiac engine in it. But I don't remember the Pontiac having the front mounting bolt holes for the factory motor mounts.

Do you have the 287 that was in there, or is it missing?

Nothing wrong with that Pontiac, if you have it, and it works.

    200hp with a 4-barrel, and no mods.

That said, it has a ladder frame, and is an open canvas for just about anything.

    Use your imagination.

Yes it has the 287, but someone took the valve covers off and everything is rusted.

I was just trying to get it running to get the state patrol inspection on it before I start putting a lot of money into it!

Put a breaker bar on the crank bolt, and see if you can turn the engine.

How bad is the rust? Can you post a picture?

Really rusted and missing rocker arms. I picked it up 2 days before I left for Sturgis and I won't be home until the end of next week.

55 to 58 Pontiac used a front engine mount. The trans bolt pattern is 55 to 60.

The GMC trucks use a cross member different from the Chevy trucks and uses the Pontiac style mounts. If you're going to put a Chevy engine in it I would use some aftermarket side mounts or build your own. It would be cool to run a pontiac engine it though. My 58 Jimmy already had a Chevy in it when I bought or I would have gone looking for a Pontiac. I love Chevys but the Pontiac has a certain cool factor.

You can zoom the screen on all browsers, on all operating systems.

Hold down the left-side CTRL key, and tap the + sign key.

Repeat as necessary, until the desired results have been achieved.

Do the same, except with the - sign key, to reverse it.

If you have a Mac, use the Command key, instead of CTRL.

Was the hood on it? Was it closed?

I'd pull the heads and look at the bores. Everything up top can be cleaned. Everything down low, unless immersed in water, might be fine.

If the bores are not too jacked-up, I would rebuild it, and run it, with a 4-barrel.

Yes the hood was on it and it was closed. The fact some had a remote start switch on it gives me a few concerns. I'll probably pull the engine and tranny and rebuild it, but put a 283 or 327 and turbo 350 in it while I'm restoring it so I can move it around and play with it some! I figured it is somewhat of a rare beast with the way it is factory setup.

Headers will be hard to find, but you can update the heads to later ones, getting bigger ports, bigger valves, and a set of exhaust flanges that take common, later headers.

That would get rid of those rusty parts, too.
