I dont have a set yet but will need a 7" wheel for my plans. What is the wheel center diameter so i can start scouring that rim piles at the junk yard.

    Thanks.

  2. Not enough information. 'Ford wheel'; what bolt pattern? (Ford used several over the years) Is it the center hole (hub) diameter that you're after, or the diameter of the wheel center? What size wheel? (14, 15, or 16"?). Are you looking for a factory 7" wheel? (These are rare).

Look for a 1983-86 Ford Crown Victoria they are 15" X 7" 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern these are commonly used on older Fords when swapping to disc brakes as the center hole is larger. Standard tire size on these will be 215/70/15

2003-06-15 01.48.04.jpg 15" centers I believe were 12 5/8" 16" centers were 13 5/8". I made some 15x7's with f100 centers, and used the chromey spoke centered wheels that are a dime a dozen. Had the machine shop chuck it up to cut the welds to knock the center out. White spoke wheel shells could be used too. It will be hard to find a wheel shell 7" wide for a 16" center.

Yeah... Half thought out question, my fault.

The early ford steel 16" wheels, of variable width... I am hoping to find a wheel I can use to put a 6.5-7 inch wheel shell on the ford centers. If not il split an og wheel shell and and add a ring, just hoping to avoid that.

I recently had a conversation with enjenjo here on the HAMB and he told me that he is making 16 X 6 and 16 X 7 using F250 hoops, the 70s Ford truck hoops are about .120 too big so he welds .060 steel plate to the outside of the center then blends it in with a sander, he then presses them together, straightens and welds them. He also told me that some of the space saver spare hoops work too, they can even be found in 16 X 3.

I questioned him about the weight of the F250 wheels, I knew that the newer F250 wheels are very heavy, he said that the earlier wheels that were used with bias ply tires are lighter than the late model wheels.

The '40 buick wheel is 16x6 but the shell is about .080 smaller than the 16" wheel center. It took two years of scrounging to find 2 16x6 '40 Buick wheels; like hens teeth. A little t******* on a big lathe with the 16" centers, and they would press in. Still have that project to do someday.

16 X 5 wheels can be made using 1965 and up Ford truck hoops, these have the outside bump for the hubcaps and they are alot cheaper then the ones with the inside bumps (and way easier to find).

  9. I just measured my 15" centers (5.5 Ford for 40-48 caps) and they are indeed 12&5/8"

I used chevy and ford truck shells to build my early Jaguar wheels (13.25"centers)
    4 @ 6.5" and 2 @ 8".

Levi, if you're gonna go with the Ford drum brakes with the 5 on 5 1/2 pattern don't forget I have a set from my coupe when I went to disc brakes. The drums have a fresh turning on them, good backing plates, and almost new shoes and wheel cylinders. If interested, we can work something out that works for both of us.

What size are the wheel center bores on a 1950 ford? I bought rotors that were supposed to fit my '49, but the center bores on the rotors are too large for my wheels. The seller said the rotors must be for a '50. Was there a change? I couldn't find the answer anywhere.

Why not measure your wheels. Centers don't vary much anyway and you can put anything together with a big enough hammer. I have put Ford rims on VW centers and Buick rims on Ford centers.

I have a '49. My wheel center is about 2 3/8", and the rotors I bought are about 2 3/4". What I'm really trying to figure out whether the guy who sold them to me knew they wouldn't fit, or whether the '50 Ford has a larger wheel center than a '49.
