The steering wheel has excessive steering wheel play left and right going down road .pitman arm has minimal play. Evan when sitting still the steering wheel has left to right play. thanks carl

  4. The adjustment is on the side of the box facing the engine. There's a nut head covering the adjuster. Pull the nut off and adjust. I'd read up on adjustment as you don't want it too tight. Also look at all of the front end components, tie rod ends, drag link, kingpins and leaf spring shackle bushings. A little bit of play here and there adds up to a lot.

You can also still buy a new worm gear for the steering shaft, if need be.

Adjust with the steering at center... The way this works the sector shaft gets pushed toward the center line of the worm gear... This is not linear, needs to be approached slowly... Maybe 1/4 turn of the adjust screw at a time, look to lesson the amount of wheel play to 2" freeplay at the steer wheel... Check often, wheels on ground... You can overtighten easily as there is NO feeling at the adjust screw... Keep in mind the box is often shot (bad worm and maybe bad sector, bearings)- before you even start... Karl

Drop the draglink from the pitman arm before making any adjustments. See factory F-1 shop manual for procedure and specs.

If the box is in a hotrod and not a 50 F-1, there is a good chance that the steering is not centered when the wheels are straight and no amount of adjusting will take out that play. The box must be centered before any adjustment.
