Aside from losing the look of a generator....any reason why a single wire positive ground alternator wouldn't be a good idea?
Does someone make a 6V alt? Just curious. I knew a guy that out a 12V one wire on his old chebby but wanted it to look like an early alternator swap so he snagged a GM regulator for an early external regulator alternator and gutted and used it as a junction box. Fooled lots of folks.
These folks can convert your original generator to an alternator: http://www.ejwhitneyco.com/automotive.html
I'll have to check that out. When I first joined the HAMB before alternators that looked like generators were readily available, they were out there just not within reach of most of us, a lot of the fellas were putting a mini alt like off of a Toyota inside a gutted jenny case. Just checked I wonder what they charge, something to think about incase I ever decide I have to have a generator look. @1951Merk @Vimtage Iron I just hadn't seen one yet. I guess I should have guessed that they exist. my curiosity always gets the best of me, but it has caused me to learn a lot of things. So I am a pain in the neck to lots of folks but it has been good for me.
Yeah they are our there... just thinking about making the switch whenever my generator decides to try and die.
All the Model A stores carry them. They go for about $150 for 30 amp and about $175 for 60 amp. Lots of Model A guys run them and swear by them.
I saw something on 6 volt alternators or converting a 12 v alternator to 6V this weekend when I was looking for a photo on how parts went back together in a 27SI alternator. Ford barn link http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55923 link for 6V + ground alternator http://www.qualitypowerauto.com/item_24/6-Volt-Alternators-Positive-Ground.htm A crap load of 6V neg ground alternators in this google search plus some non 6v stuff thrown in per google https://www.google.com/search?q=con...&oe=utf-8#q=6+volt+alternator+negative+ground
go to a local alternator shop, i had built for a tractor, one wire gm. it just takes a special regulator form what i remember, cost was under $100 out the door
