I am looking for a set of rockers for my 50 Ford, any suggestions? I was going to fab some, but due to time constraints I best buy them. I know there is Mac's and others like EMS, but who has the best quality product, price? Any help would be better than where I am at this moment in time. Thanks
I don't usally buy rockers. If there longer than my 4' brake, I cut a cross section out of them, (so they can match the shape)and take it to a sheet metal shop. They make um up for me. Cheap, and I get them in a day or two.
I will look around for a shop and give them a call. I was going to buy them because at my school(WyoTech) I have to have solid rockers in order to chop the top on it. I know that things will be a lot different once I get outta here.
We have a 10' brake that just came on the scene about a year ago. If you can give me a few pointers or tips I would much rather fab them myself. Thanks- Ben
Ben, cut a cross section of your rocker for a pattern. I usally make a small section or two first for a pratice run. You'll have to experiment a little to see which bends to make in which order. Sometimes you can't make a bend, because it gets it the way when you try to make the next one. (Some times you have to make things in two pieces, it depends on the depth of the bed on your brake) To make the curved surface of the rocker, you just brake the metal slightly every 1/8" or so. Most brakes have an adjustable limiting rod of some type, so that you can do repe***ive brakes at the same angle. This is where you have to experiment with the amount of brake (bend) & spaceing between them. When your done, you'll have slight ridges on the radius of the curve you made. A p*** with the grinder, and some primer should smooth it out just fine. Let me know if this is clear enough. It's harder to explain, than it is to do.
This is a firewall that I made on a brake.(only pic I could find of bends made with this process) I made the rounded horizontal bends by "bumping" a little at a time till I had the bend I needed. The indented part is a wheelbarrow
Looks clean tinbender. The wheelbarrow made a great firewall. It is old time tricks like that that would be forgotten if this board did not exist. That sounds pretty clear. I will give it a go in the up coming week and let you know how it turns out. Thanks
Hey speedaddict- a pair in your garage huh. how long they been sitting? any info would help if you can send me some more. Thanks- Ben
Forgot where I bought them. Never took them out of the box. I've had them for a year and a half. $65 you pick them up. I offered to you first but if you dont want them, Dan does.
For $65 you got yourself a sale. They are still in the box you said? Let me know how to get the $$ to you and where to send it to and it will be on it's way. All 49-50-51 rockers are interchangable right. I am pretty sure. Sacramento huh. Not to far from where I hail from. Thanks- Ben
Actually I have a buddy that lives in Marina and he comes up here all the time. Maybe I can get him to take them down there and you meet up with him in marina?

I took more of a bite on the bend as well as bent it a little more each flat than you would on a body part, but it works well here cuz the curved part is hidden from view on both sides once the car is sorta finished with carpets etc.
I am actually at school at WyoTech in Laramie Wyoming, so I don't think that that will work. Let me know what you want me to do?
So 50bomber what you're saying is that if you weren't at Wyotech you'd go ahead and chop the top on your '50 Ford without repacing the rockers first? That would be pretty stupid, you might want to listen to your teachers. It would be easier to sell a '50 Ford that isn't buckled in the middle like a banana.
So nads, I was just wondering where you got the idea that I was going to try to chop my top without solid rockers? I never said that. Things will be different once I get out of school because I will not have to have everything before I start doing the busy work to prepare to chop it. It is common sense that the car will buckle if you cut the top off and your rockers leave a lot to be desired, and are not solid. That is a lot of weight for something that is not structurally sound to be supporting. Thanks for the input though. -Ben

Hey, I am just saying that it would be stupid to waste a car by buckling it due to lack of structural stability.
