I wanna build up my hot rod historic correct. It's a 1929 Chevy with a 193 CI Six. When I change to a SBC wich radiator shall I use? I will also change the grilleshell. What did the guys in the 6oties use?
In the '60s two things got done, sometimes a suitable radiator from a later model car that would come close to fitting the frill shell was cut down and made to fit. The other thing that was done and probably more popular was to pressurize the earlier radiator (think model T and A here) or re-core the later radiator (think deuce or model 40) with the proper outlets added to make it work with the engine in question. If you are changing your grill shell then it will need to be something that works with your new grill shell.
Hey, quick answer. Thank you. What does "to pressurize the earlier radiator" mean? And why do you have to "re-core the later radiator"?
Pressurize means you have a closed system that does not loose water, using a 6 lbs or better radiator cap. HRP
And why do you have to "re-core the later radiator"? The stock radiator might have to have a core with greater cooling capacity installed, because any SBC will have considerably more horsepower than the old 193c.i. Chevy 6 cyl. engine that has only 50 or 60 hp. More horsepower, more heat.
Ok. Thanks. I understud. I will try to find an original radiator and get it "re-cored". That would be a nice solution, I think.
Just take the dimensions of the radiator grill shell that your going to use and start searching for a radiator to fit into it ..... like this one from Northern Radiator http://www.northernfactory.com/HIGH...ADIATORS/HOTROD_RADIATORS/GM_RADIATORS/205161 After you find the one that will perform the cooling job correctly, make it fit and then spray paint it black and enjoy your Hot Rod. You can also find radiators from http://www.spectrapremium.com/products/radiators.html You can thank me in the end.
