have you still got ball bearings in the hub, or have you upgraded to roller bearings..

    just thinkin' out loud....

  7. My brother put aftermarket wheels on his 57 Pontiac and kept breaking studs. I took a look to find the 2 original Pontiac 5/16ths cap srews holding the drums on...the wheels wouldn't fit flush on them, I removed the bolts and the problem was gone...I'll bet those rivets were causing the same problem.

Scary thing. But I'll chime in [ hopefully too late because it is sorted by now ]

I had two trailers do the same thing but similar but slightly different causes.

The first trailer was shearing a stud flush with the drum [repeatedly] .
The cause was the studs [or same stud in this case ] wasn't drilled perpendicular to the drum.
When I tightened it, it would put a bending load on it and eventually break.

The second trailer kept breaking studs at random halfway out [similar to yours]
The cause was the fancy chrome wheels I insisted on using.
The countersunk holes were not centering the lug nuts correctly. I didn't want to repair the wheels and damage the chrome so I switched to OEM wheels an it never did it again.

Check your wheels around the lug nuts to see if the are central and no side-load on them

This is a (Physical) problem. Although I can not see what's in front of me' I would guess that your vehicle is producing more stress on the front right side. As a process of elimination I would buy some good American made grade 8 lugs. The will be more brittle' But the will be stronger. I suggest you tighten the lugs by (Hand) so as to not (Stretch) them. That will weaken them and make them break. Tighten them until you feel they are tight. And stop. Al ways worked for me. Remember. Cars are like women. You gotta listen to them. Otherwise they never shut up... Just sayin.

image.jpg Drove over some crappy freeways, bridges, and surface streets this weekend to attend The Horton Hayride in San Pedro and NO lugs or studs popped off! Here's a little pic of her there enjoying the amazing weather we were blessed with.
Thanks again for all the help-hopefully this is behind me!

    Was it the rivets?

Just the DRUM? I'm crushed, it had to be hub/center register interference!

...just HAD to be... (dyin' hard here...in Atwater...):(

Glad it fixed, though...after losing the 'bullet centers'... (?)

The rivets on the drum I switched over to were original, in tact, and untouched. The rivets never did come in contact with the rim on either drum. When I layed the newer drum on the rear of the rim laying face down (as in the video I posted earlier), it never rocked back and forth like the old one.
So the old drum was definitely warped!
Additionally, after feeling how tight 70 lbs is with the new torque wrench, I don't believe I ever had the lugs tight enough to begin with!
As far as centering the rim goes, the studs (even on OEM rim) are the only method of centering. It does not fit tight on the center spindle register. Rolled the installed tire/rim and all was straight!

Oh dang I forgot, I strongly believe the push through center bullet didn't help matters either!

Really glad you posted the cure also! It's always good to hear the fix! Now drive the wheels off of it! Well not really, you already did that! Joe

Just a suggestion. Make sure you are not mixing metric and SAE. 7/16 is very close but won't hold. I was installing wheels for a friend a this happened to us.

Just read thru this entire thread and I am glad the problem seems resolved. I did note on one of the first few pictures that the dust cover was missing from the front hub. I have seen guy's not install them/forget to re-install and the grease is thrown out all over the wheel to the point the outer bearings do not have any lubrication and can heat up & seize. I suggest that the dust covers be installed after a good repack of the inner & outer bearings.
