found a 41 willys for sale in Toronto Canada. now I have to figure out how to import into the U.S , anyone here ever done this or know whats involved?
    thanks Charlie,,,,

  2. Since it was exported into Canada from US, it should come easily back to US. Lots of easy steps.

I suppose it depends on the car's most recent Canadian paperwork though. If its a Canadian field car with no registration it could get sticky.

I once bought a Canadian car that was in the US at a car show. Was unable to register the car in Kentucky as it wasn't cleared by US Customs. Fortunately there is an International airport nearby and had the clearance done there. You should be able to get the necessary clearance when crossing the Canadian/US border.

If your going to get the car yourself, cross over in Port Huron. It a little better of a drive to Toronto. And the border crossing is less of a line usually.

I would call ahead to the border and inquire what they will need for paperwork, that way you can have everything in order when you get there. Everyone will be happier that way.

I know how it feels. A few years ago I found an OT vehicle on the local CL. ( A Westfalia VW in great shape for a good price. I noticed that it was a 4 whl drive and the front driveshaft was missing)

Anyhoo....did the test drive and struck the deal. $3000. Gave the guy a check for a good down payment, shook hands ( BADDD MISTAKE), and said I would be back the next day with the cash.

Soooo----later that night the guy calls me and said the vehicle was STOLEN from his back yard!!!! Yeh Right! Somebody knew what it was and outbid me. So much for a handshake nowadays.

  15. Oh, he was only 30k off or so on his asking price?

  16. The good old days of handshake deals are over, now I think they call it Greedy or who ever has the most money. I have never been bet out of a car but I have been bet out on parts, enough to just ruin your day, let a lone have to continue your hunt again for the same part.

now that the deal is done and I have had some time to think about it I understand what the seller was going thru. he is a older guy {early 70s} and I think he realized he made a mistake on the deal with me after getting flooded with calls. if we were only talking about losing 2-3 grand on a sale {and that's a lot of money to me} I would be pi$$ed about all of this. fact is even though this guy gave me his word on a sealed deal there was 15- 20 thousand left on the table. I am a VERY straight up guy and was thinking what would I have done if I was in his shoes??????????????? not a easy question for sure! bottom line on car for me 57k from all the searching I have done over the past it still seems to be a great deal for a all steel willys. and my search is finally over. now I have to start figuring out how to get more money to change a few things LOL

A couple of other things, after crossing over into Sarnia, DO the speed limit. Their are usually alot of police in that area. After you hit exit 25, its open road. But be causious. the mounties hide in the turnarounds between both sides of the highway, sometimes, on the 402. Its about an hour to the 401, to head up to Toronto. Gas up on the US side, gas isn't cheap in Canada and their are almost no gas stations along the 402.

I used TFX International to bring a car from Canada to the US. They took care of everything(customs, etc.) and the transaction was very smooth. A really neat car guy was the driver for my transport and he communicated often during the trip.

called tfx and they were really helpful and very knowledgeable about transport over the border.
i know it sounds silly to say this after i just spent a ton of money on the willys. but i sure could use the extra savings on getting it myself as i have my own trailer. i am trying to figure out what size front wheel to run. this will be a street car 99% of the time. 15x3 or 15x4 1/2. i am running some 15x4 1/2 on the front of my 57 with radials with no problems. what do you guys say?
    thanks charlie

wife helped me put in the 409 front springs in the 57. what a pain in the a$$

  30. The three's are a little narrow if you get on to some roads with lots of curve's I would do the 4.5 myself. Three's are ok for straight lining with the 4.5 you can put just a little more tire on the ground.
