Hot Rods AXEL SEAL STILL LEAKING.WHAT TO LOOK FOR?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bruce Fischer, Aug 26, 2015.

  1. I noticed a small puddle under the olds station wagon where I had the rear bearing and seal replaced and its still leaking. What should I look for? A bent axel??? Thanks in advance. Bruce.

  2. Worn seal surface. The car is what 60 years old give or take? The seal has probably rubbed a groove in the axle.

If they used a cut-off wheel to remove the bearings / races, they might have cut enough of a groove in the axle that lets the gear oil seep out.

Sometimes you can get a seal that runs on the unworn part of the axle. Or you can buy a Speedy sleeve at bearing shops and some auto parts and industrial stores. Or as others said, it could be a clogged breather or over filled axle.

This all ***umes you have the right seal, and it was installed correctly and is not damaged,

Let's try something simple. Did you put any type of sealant on the outer edge of the seal or axle?

  7. Lowdug37, I checked the breather when I had it replaced and it was clogged. Since I cleaned it the the pinion seal has stopped leaking, but not the seal. Thanks Bruce.

  8. big57daddy, I am pretty sure the machine shop pressed it off and on.Thanks Bruce.

Try to adjust the seal to sit on an ungroved surface (***uming it's grooved) adjust it in or out all you need is 3/16" to get to an unused surface.
