A 426 hemi is a 426 wedge with hemi heads. Anyplace you can squeeze a big block chrysler you can put a hemi. They use a different oil pickup and have external oil drains but other than that most of the internal pieces are big block chrysler pieces.
Not so.... Hemis are much wider than a RB mopar like a 440 because the heads are huge. They also do not have external oil drains. Some of the aftermarket conversion heads like the Stage V do, but they are for 440 blocks which do not have the extra oil passages cast in like the real 426 blocks. The oil pickup is a 1/2", instead of the 440's 3/8". Its a good cheap mod to do to any big block mopar. The 426 hemi is based on the 426 wedge but really has to be treated as a different engine. The only interchangable parts are the bearings, timing set and cover, oil pump, and oil pan. The crank uses an 8 bolt rear flange but will fit into a 440 block however.
You lucky bastard!! How can you resist the appeal of mile-wide valve covers? That's one of those engines I'll probably be chasing forever!
Hemi blocks also ran cross-bolted mains. Lots of minor differences between the big RB wedges and Hemis. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/hemi/Hemicntr.html
Ad pistons, rings, cam unless you're looking for domed pistons with valve reliefs. Parts are no more costly than for a big wedge until you start building the heads. The pickup is 5/8 and not 1/2, I have one in the garage that's going in my B/RB. You're probably right about the drains, I was going to have to build external drains for mine, and made a bad assumption. yea the heads are wider, but that has no bearing as to if it will fit in an old chassis, only if it will fit under the hood, or on a latter body between the fenderwells. its a 426 with hemi heads. your internal parts are no more costly than the internals The 426 race hemi produced a rated 425 hp before tweaking. It is not a modern engine, it came out in '63. I guess more modern than a V-8 60, but not modern by most of our standards.
i'm willing to bet 90% of the people you'd run into wouldn't know the difference between a 392 and a 426 all they see is hemi
Listen I got through about two post and had to reply. Who cares if it fits BUY IT! plain and simple beofre someone else does. Who cares if it's even worn out. Anything can be rebuilt or repaired. Unless your idea of pretty cheap is $5000 then look at it this way. They only made so many 426 Hemi's as aposed to a hell of a lot more 392's So once you get it home and measure it yourself then decide. If you think it's gonna be too much work then sell the thing or hang on to it. It's only gonna go up in value. Did you see some of the prices those fools were paying for Hemi cars at Barret-Jackson? Heck even the clone cars were bringing STUPID money. Don't ask me why a fake is a fake and a real numbers matching car is just that the real deal. Heck if you play your cards right you maybe able to parlay that Hemi motor in to financing most of your project. If you did decide to put it in your rod I can almost garuntee you that you owuld have to guset and reenforce the hell out of the frame. They did it on factory Hemi cars so that should give you a good idea. As far as the over all demention of the block it isn't much wider then a big block chevy or a ford or a 440. The mass of the motor comes in those Gigantic heads I hope it's still there when you go back to buy it.
why? because a fake is the same car as the real deal when you drive it...the only difference is a letter on the VIN. who cares about that? when it has a hemi in it either way!
a guy here in town has one in his 5w. with fenders and stock hood. its set WAY back. he also had to heat up the side hood louvers to strach them out a little for clearence. the thing moves like a raped ape!! its kinda crazy actualy. 273's in the back, it hop's at 100 like your at a stop light. i love it!
So what your telling me is a 6 cyl Charger or Satellite is the same as a Hemi car except the engine? Not even close my friend, just one example how about all the extra body supports and bracing that came with a Hemi car? a very common overlooked item that most people who clone those cars forget or don't even know there in there. I was refering to a colectibel car not a daily driver. SoI can understand your point a driver is a driver is a driver but these clowns we're getting stupid money for clone cars or "tribute" cars? What the hell is a tribute car anyway? If a car came off the assembly line with a 6cyl. in it then thats what it is, It's not a Hemi car or a big block car etc. and shouldn't be commanding the ridiculos prices they were getting. It just goes to prove that just becasue you have a lot of money doesn't mean youhave a lot of common sense to go with it.
Looks like a '54 Buick has 5 mains too. Guess it's not THAT modern. http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/blown_buick.html
Good clones have that stuff, and the not so good ones probably work just fine without it....so what? The guys with the big bucks set the prices...there seem to be more of those guys than there are cars, which is why the cars go for so much money. I really don't care, it's not something I have to worry about....the Challenger in my barn was gonna be a hemi car, but not an accurate clone, more of a hot rod. Since Larry (the guy who owned it) died last year that won't happen. His widow will be happy with the 383.
NO!! and im pissed about it, the guy got it through lien so he just wants it gone; i emailed him, got the number of his storage facility and called it 8 times a day, and he still never replied, haven't had a chance to track down the address yet, but i know it's somewhere in the east bay. That bastard better call me back!
To me traditional would be someone pulling up beside me and lettin that beast go.Nothing like a traditional ass whippin at the stop light I say........... Bring on the parade of elephants Most awsome engine ever even if ya aint a Mopar guy and most arent they still run to the fence at the US NAtionals everytime the SS/AA cars run. Goodluck on gettin this but no call back usually means bad news.I would say he got educated Shoe
