What trans should I use ( 82 chevy pickup etc.). I have a 322 and want to use it in a 30 ford should I use a 200r4 will they stand up to torque. I think I need the widest ratio trans. What about speedo hook ups. Has anybody used one of the transmission adaptors on the street yet and what did you think?
    Thanks.

one of the car magazines recently had an article about the various overdrives. A guy had a 200R4 that he grabbed out of the yard and bolted on to try until it broke. It worked so well, he had put several thousand miles on it with no problems. the advantage of the 200R4 is some come with dual Chev/BOP bellhusing patterns, if this helps ya. Trans-Dapt should have something and there are flathead/auto adapter makers that do other vintage engines too. Just can't remember any names at the moment

The 200r4 is roughly the same size as a TH350 so if you want a smaller more compact ****** it'll help out, as for handling the torque the 200r4 is as much up to the task as the 700r4. The 200r4 also seems to be a more efficient ****** (i.e. it takes less power to operate, or less loss through it) Both leave something to be desired in their stock form. But I think if you got a 200r4 from a v8 car like an '84 Buick Wagon for instance. I think it would live behind a 322 pretty decently. You can get an adapter from http://www.transmissionadapters.com/

    Good luck...

Thanks! What trans has the widest ratio or is there a difference? Sorry to ask all these dumb *** questions but I'm a dumb *** when it comes to this new stuff. Thanks again.

THe 200-4R has a 2.76 first gear ratio i believe. THe 700R4 has a 3.06 first gear ratio. The 200-4R won't take much to be a stout piece. Hell the Grand National Buicks had 200-4R's in them.

I think the 200-4Rs had a little taller overdrive too. Something like .67 compared to .7 for the 700R4.

  9. I've got a 200r4 behind my new 292. I'm running a 3.73 rear. Quick take-offs are no problem. At 55mph the engine is running around 1200 rpm. The shop that built my trans guarantees it to handle 550 hp.
