I can't wait to see that motor run in person! Almost like a diesel? Does that mean that when I'm thru with Diesel school I can come pretend to know what I'm doing and dribble on your motor?? :D

    That's some seriously good engineering.

The engine buildup will be covered in detail on the pages of Popular Hot Rodding (my ex-magazine), while the buildup and testing of the car will be covered in my new magazine, Street Thunder.

You know how it is with ex's... LOL

from a die hard poncho guy along with rocky....i'm happy for ya! i have a blown 750 HP pontiac 389 engine that powered MICKEY THOMPSON'S CHALLENGER 1 . the companies that did your work (especially butler) are top notch people. you must of had fellow pontiac people looking out for you and guiding you in the proper directions!

we've (anderson bros. race team) have 2 nostalgic A F/X tempests that are currently running 10's. all steel 3,400 LB. cars with cast heads, stock crank & rods.

love to see some 1/4 miles times out of your engine some day. best of luck.

Let another Pontiac lover stand up and say thanks to you Scotch.

You have always walked on the other side of the tracks when it comes to what powers your rides. And even though the Engine Masters turned out to be just what I was worried it would be (a Chevy fest), I could tell while reading that you were really pushing the readers to build something different.
(it's justtoo bad they didn't listen).

You really practice what you preach...

....And you're mechanical knowledge is in the top 1% of this (and other) board(s). (will you be puttting this info up on some of the other boards too?).

This may have been fun for you but it really is a historic thing you've done. I hope more folks recognize this when it hits the mag racks....(and when you put the damn thing on the track!!).

The Poncho Gods are smiling. So are we.

My 34 truck will likely be Olds or Buick powered, but my bubble top will be Poncho all the way.

    Thanks for sharing!!!!!

That is one sweet engine. Are those SCE titan gaskets? The ones with the silicone beads around the water passages.

Concerning the strength of the 4L80E:
Check out ls1tech.com There is a guy over there putting about 1250hp through his 4L80E. Goes by "Parish8" on there.

Also, since it is going to be a street car, and not a dedicated racer, do you have an estimate for gas milage? just curious.

I'll look for him. I've got a program developing with one of my good friends at TCI Transmissions, and he's about as sharp as they get. I trust him completely and the TCI trans computer will be full compatible with my FAST EFI computer. This should work just fine. Knowing someone else is putting big power through a 4L80-E is reassuring..thanks for the tip..!

It's a Wenzler Gutsram base with an adapter plate machined for the injector hat.

Love your stuff, by the way...

I've done it 3 times before as a navigator (timer in the pass. seat) but I've yet to drive it. I wanted a worthy vehicle of my own...

The other three runs were good- 2 wins and one top 5. Running Silver State is addictive...it's kinda like Bonneville, in that you work all year to get the chance to run it. The big difference is that it's on a public highway and street-legal cars are the overwhelming majority. It's certainly a place to show what you've got and get real data on the capabilities of your machine.

I'm hoping to go 180 in this car. That should make me happy. The best we did in the previous car was 165...for about 6 solid minutes. I'm still buzzing. The coolest part was that we then drove it home to SoCal. Great experience.

If you ever have the chance to run Silver State- as a driver OR a navigator, do so.

Hey Scotch... Have I mentioned that you're my hero?

If you want to do another crappy little "bellybutton" SBC, I've got a nice top end for it and a well set up Chevy II chassis to "test" it!;)

Wow...I have been mulling this over for awhile, and I'll have several different center sections for the Ford 9 with different gearsets installed. The tallest gears I intend to run will the the 3.08s for Silver State. I also have 3.90:1 and 4.30:1 for street and strip, respectively.

With the 3.08s, I am really hoping to get close to 20mpg. That may sound impossible, but I will have a "freeway" EFI program developed for it, and the trans will have a lockup converter and overdrive. At that speed, the engine will be almost idling down the freeway. If I do it right, high teens are a possibility. 20 mpg would be dreamy.

Around town, it's going to suck really bad. But I didn't build it for fuel economy. Quite the opposite, in fact. LOL

I'm still curious what my 87-octane motor would do in your car. I've got a 150-shot for it now... It won't mean much in my station wagon, but I bet it'd be a "playa" in your Chevy II.

    You saw that story, right?

    http://www.compcams.com/Community/Articles/Details.asp?ID=1945664039

545 plus 150...hmm...not bad for pump gas below 6,500 rpm... LOL!!

Maybe I should port-match the intake...naaaahh...it's cooler running it out of the box...HA!

I love it big cube when everyone is saying NO fuck it it's your$ and your engine. Fuck those who say it is stupid. I had the same shit when I built a 400 inch olds out of a 324 576 hp 531 inch torque it kicks ass in a 1800 car. Thanks for stepping out of the box and building something new. If someone thinks this is gay I will personally kick the shit out of you. GOOD POST I lOVE IT !!!!!

Thanks Amigo. Let me know when you're planning the next oddball buildup. I'd like to hear what you're planning, and I'll help ya if I can...I know folks who will make the oddball parts no one else will touch, and that can open a few possibilities when you're breaking new ground.

  26. Scotch....let's throw that monster in my old Pontiac rail and see if it has enough grunt to break the '35 Ford rearend that's in it.... :)

oh HELL yes! When I get a chance I want to come visit ya and see that thang...very cool!

Have you seen the Poncho rails/funny cars being built at Pontiac Heaven?

    www.pontiacheaven.org

The owner- Steve Barcak- is a cool dude. He's got some freaky cool Poncho stuff and he's putting it all back to work.. on the track...where it belongs!

    ~Scotch~

  28. Scotch....I was kidding about putting your motor in there. It would probably rip that old car in half ! :D

We sold it to a friend about 2 years ago but it's only 15 minutes from here so if you're in the neighborhood......

I sent some Emails back and forth with S.B.....and I've visited the website. My current Pontiac project is a Pontiac Iron Duke 4-banger for my track-T modified.
