I am sure this has been discussed already, but what I want to know is approximately how many Hambers have fiberglass body cars? I have never owned one myself and I was brought up to think that if its not steel its not real. However, now that I live in Florida and not Wisconsin anylonger, I have been told that in Florida fiberglass is the only way to go due to the salt water. I am having a hard time accepting this, anyone else going through this delema? I did get told by one guy, he owns a Corvette, "My 63 is real enough and fast enough and its fiberglass".
Just personal opinion. The only time that I think Fiberglass is cool is when used for a concept car like the Roth shit. But again thats just personal opinion.
If you build with fiberglass you'll be lucky to get a decent portion of your money out of the car if you ever decide to sell it. You'll do a lot better with a steel car, even if it's a repop. And in most cases, the intial build cost isn't that much more.
I've built both, I like both, I currently have both,..... and I am really tired of this being a big deal to some folks, build what you want and screw anyone that doesn't like it. Because no mater WHAT you build there will be those that don't like it for some lame reason or another.( just go look at there car or in some cases someone else's car that they bought, or just there idea of what they "want to build someday", chances are that there idea of the perfect Hot Rod will fall short of what you think is cool or acceptable) sorry for the "Tude" But this subject has been beaten to death,..... just build something that gives YOU that big stupid Hot Rod grin, after all who are you building it for anyway ?
If I was a betting man, I would bet that this thread will be closed rather quickly. Before it gets closed I would like to throw in a few usefull comments. Facts about Fiberglass cars They can be just as fun as steel cars. They can look very good. They can cost less than a steel car. (Depending on what make/model you want) They can bring just as much money as any other car if they are nice enough They don't ding in hail storms or by car doors in the supermarket parking lot. You can do everything with a fiberglass car that you can with a steal car (well, except for get a magnet to stick to it and say "I own a steel car") Bottom Line:If it is cool enough, people usually don't mind and if they do, who cares it's my car and I have loads of fun with it!!!!!!!!
Glad to hear you say that, Nick. My 31 coupe is real steel but will use glass fenders and decklid. Not necessarily for any other reason other than I got a screamin' deal on 'em at the time. As a swap meet shopper, I sort of have to take what comes my way when I have the cash to do something about it. I hope nobody shuns me for using the glass, but I love the way it looks so far. I think I do need to find a good hammer and dolly teacher for the roof though. Somebody set the body on it's roof at one time or another, and it's beyond "rough"...
personally, i'd rather have a glass car. That way I could drive it every day without having to worry about some fool on a cell phone wiping out a 70 year old irreplaceable car. Back east, everything rots to hell too. I remember seeing some really nicely finished A's with a couple of rust bubbles forming under the paint.
Yeah, the 'Glass vs Metal thing has been done to death... The only thing I think is interesting is that he was told he HAS to have glass car in Florida. Really? There are no steel cars there? A buddy of mine bought a bought a Zagato bodied car that spent some time there, and its a mess. The salty air helped the corrosion along that will happen if two dissimmilar metals touch ( Steel and Aluminum on that car ) But I bet you can protect a steel car enough to own one, if you want. As far as how many people own glass cars on the HAMB, who cares....
Thanks guys, thats all I really needed to hear. I am going with a glass car due to my living so close to the water. I can honestly say there are very few old cars in this Panhandle area, I was told that every hurricane that comes through salts everything to death. I want to drive this car everyday and everywhere rain or shine, cold and heat. I just needed a little push to get me to make up my mind. Thanks again. Guido Now someone close this before it becomes some huge debate.
