Didn't Pat Gahnl use one in his 32 Chevy back in the day? I'm thinking the only difference is the diameter of the king pins?
Here, Sid has somewhat of a chart that tells what the axle measurements are. http://www.droppedaxles.com/CHEVY_AXLES.html Reading that it looks like it will work as long as you use kingpins and spindles that match the axle. I've got an axle and spindles for my roadster project that were given to me with he belief that they were 47/54 but they may be earlier because of the diameter of the spindle where the inner bearing race rides. Not a big problem as a guy can swap races and go.
The 28-54 pickup axles will all interchange except for the kingpin and spindles. 28-40 has .734dia kingpins and 41-54 has .866 dia kingpins. The 38 steering arms will bolt on to spindles 28-59
