hi, I'm looking for measurements and dimensions for a 32 roadster firewall. wanting to scratch build the firewall. plenty of pix around but haven't been able to locate anything measurements for it. thanks.
Ahhhh.... Build it to fit your body. Spock died, but it is illogical to start with a firewall without an original to use as a pattern. So many questions are posed here asking for advice when we don't have a clue what you're doing. By the way a '32 body inside the cowl band is 36" wide at the belt line (the widest part) and 28 1/2" from the frame to the center of the cowl.
There is no reference point the previous reply is about as good as you can ask for ,the top of the fire wall has a crown and between the two dimensions you have been given taper from the top to the frame. HRP
If you added your general location someone might have one you could borrow to work with as a pattern. Charlie Stephens
I rebuilt a firewall from a band and a cut up center. The first thing I did was trace the outside of a stock firewall on to a piece of masonite. You must know someone with a firewall?
Are all the stupid people in the world suddenly aware that Ryan had surgery today and are trying to sneak in under the radar with stupid questions? Somebody make me a Moderator!
Not so much that its stupid, but just impossible to answer. Have you ever done any metal fabrication work? I'd think not, else you'd know why its impossible to describe in words or a simple sketch or two. Looking head-on at a firewall, how would you expect someone to describe the various radii, their locations, and the lengths of the straight sections that connect them? Ford's original production drawing for this likely had a hundred or more measurements on it just to describe the outside shape. All those points would be laid out and then connected by smooth curves p***ing thru them. The only way to get those dimensions today would be by measuring an existing firewall and plotting them out. But if you have the firewall to measure, then the simplest thing is to trace the outline instead of wasting a day measuring. OTOH, if you just want to practice and see if you can make a firewall, then you could take the few dimensions given above and use them along with some pictures to make an approximation of the various radii, etc. It wouldn't be an accurate firewall, but if you are able to fabricate whatever you draw, then you'd also be able to fabricate the real thing if you had an outline of the shape. Neither the real thing, nor an approximation, is a simple tin bending job, but either one would be very educational.
Maybe Doug intends to built a flat firewall and just needs a few dimensions. If that is the case he sure left an important detail when he asked the question. Charlie Stephens
He could buy the band from Brookville and make a flat firewall, I can't imagine trying to make the band. Some repo feet would help also.
Maybe my request was too vague. Was mostly looking for height. Width at widest point. Width at base where it meets the frame, etc. Basic measurements that any technical drawing would have
I have made the firewall band with help of drawing/pattern from Andy. It was not so easy but i think result is not bad
I'm making copy of the original firewall by myself and I'm close to finish it. My question is how tall is the firewall measured from surface of the frame (or foot base) to the top of it (edge of hinge mounting surface) Someone mentioned 28 1/2 to the top of the cowl...but where exactly...for me seams to be to much. Could somebody check it?
I measured 28 1/2" on my UP firewall. Widest point measured on the inside flange (the flange that fits inside the cowl) is 36 1/16". V8-m that looks like some nice work.
Do you guys realize this question and thread is from 2015. He has probably built it by now or given up on it.
