I think this is an early 327. I took off the leaking adapter. Seems it has three gaskets. I bought the large one that fits the old canister type filter. Are the other two available? Do I need the one sandwiched between the two adapter pieces?
I had some problems with an adapter like that one,, There is a stock chevy one that is smaller, goes on with two bolts and the spin filter seals to the block with the canister o ring. Sorry I don't have the part number, and I think NAPA carries.
they are not just O rings. The outer one is the normal one that comes with a replacement canister filter, the smaller one is special for that adapter. If I were in your position, I'd find a canister and put it back stock.
Great idea but the header gets in the way. There is another type that I put on my 283 but I don't think it will work on the early blocks (Is this a '63?).
As stated the outer ring is standard can filter stuff. I make the inner from closed cell gasket material. Real parts stores sell it.
I think this part of the block is all the same from 1956-67ish. The casting date at the top rear of the block will help us figure out what year it is, but it shouldn't matter. The 68ish-up blocks use a different piece that bolts to the block, and takes the spin on filter directly.
Looks like a third gasket stuck to the top of the filter hole. Is that a standard gasket? The large outer canister gasket had to come from Ohio to MD. So much for real parts store.
the canister gasket comes with a new filter, but I guess no one stocks the filters any more. And it's not surprising at all that you can't get the gasket by itself, 48 years after they quit making the engine that used it.
This its the NAPA adapter. Is the felt seal going to go up far enough to seal in the middle? If not, does it matter?
It does not seal. Instructions call for "the original byp*** plate" which, to the best of my limited knowledge, it did not have with the cannister. The aftermarket byp*** plate by Lund mfg (dark part in first picture) will not work. I did not see a byp*** plate listed by napa. Any source for the byp*** plate?
The "original byp*** plate" is the old dark colored part in the two pictures in the first post. The byp*** valve is the little gizmo with the spring and small disc. really, that is the original byp*** plate.
Thanks Squirrel. Went back to the first adapter but putting the new canister gasket in the groove in the block. Learned about filter oil flow. No leaks so far.
