Working on the pulleys and belt on my sbc. I noticed the crank pulley is 1/8" closer to the block than the water pump pulley. Hence my belt is out of line by that much. Upon further inspection I discover the pressed on pulley mount on my short water pump which should be 5.625"(dimension used to measure a small water pump) away from the pump mounting /mating surface is actually 5.875 away.

Question is.......is there a way to slide that mounting collar down the shaft a little more using some type of tool like a balancer install tool or something.

    thanks,

    Chuck

Normal way is to take the back cover off the pump, support the impeller end of the shaft, and press the hub on to the correct location.

Press it on?....any chinese tool specifically designed for this or will a hammer and socket suffice?

Hammer and socket will probably work, hit it gently so you don't go too far. You could also put a spacer between the crank pulley and balancer. Speedway and others sell a three piece shim pack for lining up pulleys.

Or use a thick washer to space the pulley out,I've done that in the past and less likely to damage the impeller. HRP

Definitely go with the shimming option over diving into the pump innards.

It's been years, but I seem to remember finding pumps with slightly different heights.

If you press the hub down, think about how you're going to replace the pump when it starts leaking, and you're not near a press.

Read what Rich B said take the back off the pump use something to support the back of the shaft ,use a press to move the pulley mount to the right spot ,go slow don't press to far, You could try the hammer and socket with the pump mounted on the motor ... BUT you will have to replace the pump later when the impeller wears out the back cover. If you don't want to remove the pump use the spacers .

  9. read what rich b and rtp said

wasnt there some oddball corvette pumps that were a little longer than a "short" pump but way shorter than the long pump? FWIR it had a larger diameter shaft too

Yeah....and I have one of those pumps on an '88 roller block I have in another vehicle...it is also a reverse flow unit used with serpentine systems.

No way I would attempt using the socket and hammer with the pump on the motor or without taking the back cover off and supporting the other end of the shaft.

Thanks boyz.....I'll be giving that a shot. Heating up the pulley mount couldn't hurt either before wacking it.......easy, still talking about the water pump here fellas

Is this rebuilt? If so go back and ask to measure some other short pumps

I just went with a correctly made shim last Saturday...got it from a friend, but he bought it aftermarket somewhere...do a search..it is a simple, easy, and correct fix..

57 thru 62 Corvettes used a spacer behind the balancer, it was the same thickness as the front motor mount which bolted between the water pump and block. The spacer was 1/8 to 3/16 inches thick and was made to fit in the keyway so it wouldn't rotate.
