Well since its tech week I decided to put this up so that maybe it will help someone out. Its how to make a 2 part silicone mold off an emblem in the first part, then the second part is casting the emblem in br*** to be chrome plated. Im not sure if this fall under traditional, but I couldnt find a technical prefix in the discussion forum.
I'm after one of these, only problem with making my own, would be finding one to take mould from. 29 Hudson.
Ill keep an eye open for one at hershey next week for ya.. You could have it 3d modeld and directly printed in br***, or wax. Or you could try your hand at sculpting one in clay or wax.
I am somewhat confused by the second video. The "tree's" don't equate with the rectangular mold somehow. He cast all the plastic emblems then fused them to a tree. What did I miss? How did they not melt in the second vid? I feel dumb right now. Tim
Sorry, the wax patterns are put on a tree then the investmet is poured around them. The investment is basically plaster of paris. Once the plaster hardens the wax is melted out leaving a hollow cavity for the molten metal to flow into. Hope this helps
Nice Videos..However,,,,The equipment you used for all the different operations is not usually found in a HAMBers garage..
Most all of that equipment was made in my garage. That fancy bell jar was bought, but i used to just use a paint pot to vacuum the investment and a toaster oven to burn out the wax.
Yea, ive been working on that too. Not the best of work as I didnt smooth the pattern any before making the mold off it. I was in a bit of a rush on this one..
Ya wouldn't get shot. Its, "Kick your teeth in". Or, get the boss's blessing. I want one,,,,,,,or four too.
Thanks for the video, really could opened up a whole world of casting Ideas. I ll have to come up with some equipment but looks very doable.
I enjoyed our tech video's! I wish you would have shown your technique for investing the wax emblems and heating the investment up to melt out the wax. Thanks for posting!
Fascinating. I used to sell investment castings and was always amazed at the precision possible. Just for some who may be interested the lost wax process goes back to at least the ancient egyptians
Im half tempted to throw up one of my old videos where I make a part using mostly hand tools and the ferris file a wax. The Ferris file a wax is neat stuff as you can work it with common wood working tools if anyone decides they want to play with some get the "green" its the hardest of the waxes and a max wax pan (runs on aa batteries and only costs $20.00) so you can bond pieces together. Im sure someone can think of something....
same method ( silicone molds ) can be used to make new tail light lenses too . I made some marker lights that do not exist this way from rear markers just instead of red , they are yellow resin .
You should post a how to as well. I think this stuff is great and can be used outside of automotive as well.
by the time I get my materials from my supplier , tech week will be over , and seriously its the same way as he describes in making emblems except using the clear resins .. and he posted it first so he should get the consideration for it . at a later date I might post up the markers I made with LEDs moulded in
Great videos. I always wondered how emblems were made & kept so consistantly the same. Thanks for posting.
