Ok, before you cringe about a SBC going into a Dodge, one of my friends just bought a 49 Dodge Coronet and since I have TONS of Small Block Chevy stuff, engines, 4 speed stuff etc that is the way we will likely go. I have searched threads and as every other car, there have been quite a few 49 Dodge's that have received Small Block Chevys, however I cant really find any pictures. Be great to see what type of mount design etc that people used for the swap. I am a pretty avid welder, however another friend of my friends is UNREAL, can pretty much weld paper so he will likely be fabbing up headers from scratch etc. We were thinking about a subframe swap, but seems that rustyhope.com and some others here have come up with some good brake options, so maybe we will keep the Dodge frame and work off that. I appreciate any input, pictures that you guys may have available. Car is likely going to have an early street machine / Hot Rod look, may even go the route of a Gasser build...we shall see. Bostoncamaro, I just bought a 49 Coronet myself, in May, and I am probably committing one of the greatest crimes according to the MOPAR guys.. I opted to do a frame swap and place the Dodge body on a 96 Chevy s10 frame, for multiple reasons, mainly for the availability of parts and I wanted to see if I could actually pull it off. I have the rolling chassis about ready for mock up with the body and Chevy 355. I have only seen two 49 coronets with SBC's but there was plenty of room under the hood. I didn't get a chance to look at how the mounts and everything else looked though. I would be interested in seeing some pictures of your project and I will try and post some of mine. Maybe it will help each other with some ideas. Good luck to you.
Most guys that put a small block Chevy in their Mopars are too ashamed to take pictures of the deed! Just kidding, sort of, your car do your thing. Mounting a small block Chevy anywhere is pretty straight forward. Hang the motor over the hole, build mounts between the frame and the motor, weld them to the frame, bolt in the motor. If you really need a vision, look at the body to frame mounts on your Mopar and adjust the sizing as needed. Fatman probably makes a kit, as do about 20 other companies. Try a Google search if you still are not sure. Mounting a sbc is about the easiest thing you can do on a hot rod. If I sound like an ass, its because I am concerned about the difficult things you are going to face. Are you sure you are up to this project? Gene
thanks for posting, not my first rode for sure, but yeah that place Butch's makes some nice kits, that are so affordable that it wouldn't make sense to fab up on our own, car will have tons of other mods anyways, so buying the mount kit will make sense, car will get fender well exit headers which we will make up
hey hey ,heres my 49 , 400 sm block , i used a cradle style mount , trimmed the innerfender wells , recessed the firewall and was able to use a long waterpump and aluminum radiator up front on home made perches. i like the setback , it gives better front to rear weight distribution.

Haven't seen a 49 with a Chev but some years back, helped a friend mock up a Chev 350 in a 37 Dodge coupe, we also tried a Dodge 340 and the Chev fit much easier. The Dodge had a lot of interference between the steering box and starter and exhaust manifold. This surprised me because the engines aren't that much different in overall size. I hate to admit the Chev is easier to fit, but it's true. PS we put the Dodge in. It took a mini starter and a different manifold but it fit in without too much trouble. But not as easy as the Chev.
