  1. Quite true in this case.

  2. You know what, only an idiot who misguidedly thinks that he's smarter than everyone else would come up with such a line of BS as that. All the while thinking he's clever and nobody sees right thru it. A true POS

Go the extra mile and support the HAMB and become an Alliance Member.
I'm with you on that one falcongeorge, and the icing on the cake is if they are an Alliance Member which really cements the trust.

I still think it would be a good idea to not allow Swap Meet postings unless the member has 100 "real" posts. My opinion is that anyone who doesn't participate on the regular board is not a true enthusiast, and more interested in making money, and you know where that can lead.

I totally disagree with this. If this were the rule, I wouldn't have a Hurst Synchro-Loc for my Cad-lasalle trans, a '33 steering box for my coupester, or a set of adjustable rockers for my 324. And syncro-locs for side-shift cads are damn near impossible to find. Not one of those guys had over 100 posts on the main forum, and every one of those transactions was seamless, I would do business again with any one of them in a heartbeat. I'm selfish, I want my parts. And not everyone is as verbose as I am thank god. Some guys just don't talk much.

It's hard to disprove a negative; to each his own.

I am a hardcore lurker but have been a member since 09. I enjoy reading but not much of a participant although I did my first post today! Have bought a lot of parts through the hamb and try to take care of them that day. Quite a few times I don't receive any reply to parts inquiries and always wondered if my lack of " history" had anything to do with it. It's always a gamble buying and selling and I had a scammer from an ad I posted on the board try and fleece me. For the folks who have been burned the only thing you can feel good about is karma. The bad kind is usually way more entertaining than a good old fashioned ass whippin.

There are lots of other ways to check a guy out other than post count. I recently bought something that I had looked for for over a year from a guy with ZERO posts, and it was something I REALLY needed for my project to move forward. First off, he responded to a request I had in my signature line, rather than a "parts wanted" post, so I knew he was actually lurking the forum, not just perusing the "parts wanted" ads looking for pigeons. Secondly, he had been on the HAMB for several years. If he had come here looking to rip someone off, it wouldn't have taken him 5 years to get around to pulling the trigger, scammers just aren't that patient. Thirdly, once I talked to him a bit, it was clear he knew enough about the parts in question that I was convinced he actually had them, and he sent me a photo that didn't show up in a google image search. Some guys just don't talk that much, that doesn't make them thieves. You can see on a guys profile when he was last signed on, and what he was looking at.
I have also bought from guys that have very few posts on the main forum, but run lots of "for sale" ads.
If a guys been selling parts on here for five years, and no-one has ever bitched him out on the main board, its a pretty fair bet hes not ripping people off. Hell, if a guy has LURKED here for 5 years, that also makes him a safe bet in my books. Scam artists are "hit & run" they aren't going to hang around for half a decade just to scam someone.
Most of it is really just common sense, if some guy has joined up a week ago, and suddenly has some rare part I need, that's gonna make me uneasy.

I totally agree about trying to buy from Alliance members, but it doesn't always get you the parts you need, and you then sorta check past posts, etc.
I have a friend, younger than I, but almost everybody is, who posts stuff on HAMB for sale from time to time, who leads a very busy life and seldom posts except to sell stuff. Says he had started back posting when Ryan made the big changes awhile back, he just hadn't had the time to get back on here and learn the new stuff.. He's always buying and selling, wheeling and dealing in hot rod parts in a fair and honest way. So you see there are no cut and dried ways to tell good guys from bad. If it's a lot of money, you better either check it out in person, or find a HAMBer you trust that is nearby to check it out.
Found my '40 Ford coupe on here, was listed in classifieds, and the guy had some posts way back of other cars and parts to sell, but very little in forum posts, although there was no negative stuff to be found.
So then after a long phone conversation, I checked him out on things about himself and his family online, and all he had told me was true.
Then came the only part of the deal not as cheaply available to all HAMBers: I'm a retired airline machinist whose old airline flies to within 30 mins of his home, and flying space available at a greatly reduced price, I flew there, he picked me up @ airport and I got to look the car over on a lift and drive it about 25 miles.
Satisfied that the car was what I wanted, we negotiated a price and I paid a substantial deposit and ageed to wire to his bank the rest after returning home. Returned later after bank transfers and trailered the car home. It's a damn nice car, and I knew that at my age (78) I'd never be able to build such a car even if I could find a body as cherry as he had started with.
This was admittedly a long drawn out process, but it does help reinforce my comment that there are no absolutes in buying and selling cars and parts.

  15. All of this information as to how to keep things on the up and up is very good. Sure hope everyone spending there hard earned $$$ learns something from this information.
I have bought and sold a lot of deuce parts here and am glad to say all my dealing have been very good with everyone.
This is a outstanding addition to all us hot rod nuts to have such a great web site to work with-in to buy and sell parts.
    THANKS RYAN

Some good information but how many have looked at his trade profile or posted on it?

Bad report on him back in May.

  17. He was banned shortly after the trading profile started. So he got a chance for 2 negative posts to show up on it. I got involved with him way before trading profile was started.

IMHO, there would be no HAMB as we know it if everyone was a parts vendor or lurker. That's not to say the folks are not honest, but if you're only posting to sell parts, then you're "using" the HAMB as if it were Craigslist. It's like the guy who arrives at the club 5 minutes before the cover charge kicks in, orders a couple of free ice waters, enjoys watching the band then leaves w/o spending a dime (then is probably the first to Bitch when the joint goes belly up).
Give back a little. If you're an old car parts vendor you have knowledge and probably an interest in old cars. At least give back a bit by participating and sharing some knowledge.
If you lurk and enjoy a build or tech how to, give the guy a thanks or thumbs up. It's nothing more than walking through a car show and telling an owner "nice paint" or "I like what you did with the interior".
