Thank you for the post Jive bomber.
It really is an honour to compete on the same sand as the great pioneers of the 1920's. To be on that sand, and being able to compete, in a traditional hot rod, is something I never thought would ever happen. And the best bit is, they asked us to do it.
The VHRA has raised the profile of proper vintage style hot rods that local government come to us.
As for the sand, it's tough. Every time I've driven it it's been different. From morning to afternoon it changes, from day to day it changes and year to year, it changes. Really hard to work out the best setup for the car, do you go for wide or skinny tyres, high or low pressure, or what gears to run in the quick change, who knows, not me that's for sure.
Driving on the sand. What can I say. Can't get the power down, can't steer straight, can't take your eyes off the two flags that show the start of the timed section, can't feel the ground under the car and can't make the tiniest error. I went through the time section at 97.8mph with the rear tyres breaking free every time I tried to give it more. Third gear, out of four, 3000 rpm, loads more left in the car, but just can't use it, how the hell the faster guys are doing 116mph here, it's just madness that I can only admire and aspire to.
The cars. 170 of the finest, period perfect cars you'll ever see in one place. No wrongs 'uns, no billet, no disc brakes, no IFS, no modern efi fuel injection, no rat rod ****, just proper hot rods built and driven by people who "get it".
It is one of the greatest places to be, and the pubs like us there too.

I was lucky enough to be visiting family in the UK and managed to get down for this race.
It was a sight to be seen.
