According to the story it had stock valves. Not true. I put in big stainless valves that do a lot for flow. As it happens this was a 352 Packard that I got out of the trunk of a 55 Packard. All apart. After I machined the valve stems for keeper groves and cut them to length, and had the seats opened up to fit, I found out that my new Big valves were the same size as 56 374 Packard. Which I had a pair of. I put one little hole in one of the valve pockets when I was porting it. Al Liest installed a plug that seemed to work fine.

I'm not crying.I'm just wondering if they are comparing apples to apples? How modified is the LS? What is the streetability and mileage of each engine?

Heard from Jack. He still owns the Packard. The guy in the story ran it for the Engine Masters. He was not experienced img71.JPG with Hilborn injection, so they did the tunnel ram. Pretty nice job, I think

Rich, how do you get around those 3 exhaust outlets, is there room to really open that middle one up ? Seems like a blower would help push it out but its still a handicap

If you have made up your mind to build a Packard, you just have to ignore stuff like that. The center port is about 150% of the end ports. Off hand I don't know how close together the center cylinders fire. I never expected it to be fast. I just wanted to run it. I had never seen a Packard powered car on the salt. Now lots of people have.

Considering that they are building to make peak power at 6000, they are probably more "streetable" than the 355 in my daily, and it gets 18 mpg with a od and 4.56's...I noticed the cam in the poly was smaller than the one in my daily...But then I would guess that the finished min. csa in the poly is probably bigger than what I have to work with, at this point at least. It also has considerably less inlet restriction. Maybe I need hilborns and a megasquirt...:)

betcha with a 6000 rpm redline the Packard would make more power with longer intake runners....Too late for EMC, but it would be interesting to test a runner extension between the base and the plenum, be pretty easy to make out of resin impregnated 1/2" plywood. My guess it would pick up mid-range without hurting power at 6000, would do good things under the EMC scoring system...

P1070811.JPG P1070852.JPG Saw and heard it at World of Speed in 'o8 - Made my day- Too much! I like the use of unusual motors, the Vega-Packard is my favorite, along with the the Salt Cat Racing Jag-Buick straight Eight . Thanks, Rich!

Note how tall K***es manifold adaptor is? It doesn't have to be that tall to make the intake fit....;)

Really, that engine isn't a y-block anymore, its a "K***e". In terms of making power, an engine is its intake tract, and this one bears as much resemblance to a Y-block as a mallard duck. Its more small-block chevy than it is Y-block.

The later South American Ford Y blocks did away with the stacked intake ports, so, yes, it is a Y block.

Nice to hear the Chevy guys bellyaching again.

George: It fits in a Vega. Should go in a S-10 just fine. I believe 8 or all 10 head blots from small block Fords are in the same place as a Y block. I thought about a Cleveland head on a 292. But you are right, it wouldn't really be a Y block anymore.

Before putting the Packard in it I had a couple of GMC engines, a 270 and a 302 in the car. Then a 460 Ford, followed by a 455 Pontiac, and then a 392 Chrysler. The Pontiac was fastest.

460 should have been fastest. But it went 197 on an $1100 PAW master rebuilders kit. Single 4 bbl on an Offy port O Sonic and a Crower flat tappet cam that came with the kit.The Pontiac cost a lot more than that and went 208. $3500 port job. Kinsler injection, John DeLong roller cam. BME rods. Stuff like that. Needless to say that was not my motor. I ***embled it for a guys one owner '68 GTO. Had the original heads from the GTO on it. Ran it in the Vega to try it out. He went 206 I went 208. Had I fooled with the Ford much at all it would have been much faster, I think. The 92 was all cast off parts and swap meet junk. But it sure looked racy in there.
