Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if anywhere does a reproduction 1935 Ford front brake drum. I am positioned in Australia and have found next to nothing. Any help would be great thanks. Pete.T
I'm fairly certain they are not reproduced. I have a nice pair, but it would probably be expensive to ship them to you. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Airstream, any chance you can post up some pix of the drums you are looking for. I've got quite a few left overs I could part with. .....................Jack
Here is a pic of a 32-4 drum(L) next to a 35 drum(R). The 35 drum is bored on the inside for a grease seal.
The only mechanical break drums I have seen reproduced are the Model A ones. I have never seen the Rocky Mountain drums reproduced or the V8 drums. Luckily, not too many people keep the mechanical breaks on their cars so the cost is usually pretty reasonable when you find them, the large expense will of course be shipping.
they are the same as the picture on the right in Carter's picture of the 1935 Drum and they also have the grease seal recess. Mine are getting a bit thin and as I'm using them on my race car it is on the back of my mind at every turn.
I just pulled a pair of an an old axle , they have the seal recess but l had a feeling they were of an a model. Let me know the dimensions etc and l can check them out
Remember guys to have your tape measure handy! You have Model A's at 11" dia, 32-34 at 12" dia and the '35's are 12" X 2" wide. Have fun!
Hey guys i know its an old thread... But is it the same spindle size for all the model a drums to 35? And what is the spindle size? I have an axle that has these kind of brakes and want to change the brakes for a regular hub that can take diferent kind of wheels. Thanks
I am not sure what you mean with your last sentence. Do you mean you want to go with the later hydraulic drums? Charlie Stephens
Im sorry for the confusion Charlie,I have a vintage trailer with 28-36 rocky mountain brakes (but no backing plates or sleeve cylinders etc because the axle is just a regular trailer axle,so tube, spindles, brake drums and wheels) I want to pull the rocky mountain brake drums and wheels because i feel they deserve to be used in a hot rod somewhere. And i want to insinstall a hub/drum that fits and uses cheap wheels that i can just throw cheap tires.
Don't worry about the drums. All of the late '31 through '35 drums were the rocky mountain brakes that you are describing. The only ones that are particularly desirable are the late '31's which fit a Model A and are 11 inches in diameter. There is a good chance that the drums are oversize and worthless anyway, have you checked them? The main thing you need to worry about is that the wire wheels go on the '35 and earlier drums and the solid wheels go on the '40 and later drums. Which are you trying to use? Using the solid wheels on the '35 and earlier drums can be very dangerous because you stress the wheel when you install it leading to a potential failure. Thank you Charlie. THE trailer came with a set of 15"×4 steel wheels..Nothing that i have seen before...They sit Properly on the Drum. I wanted to stay away from 140.00 a tire for this wheels hence my initial question of a diferent hub/drum... I will keep looking for newer model steel wheels that dont have that much offset. Thank you.
I am very surprised they fit. Did someone grind the raised areas off of the drums? Be sure they really fit before you crank the lug nuts down and force them to fit. Charlie Stephens
I did check and everything fits... I still wat to change the hub to use smaller, cheaper tire. Or find a couple of reverse steelies
