Yesterday I decided to go talk to a few local old car guys that I've never talked to and it paid off. I asked the first one if he had anything for sale and he said "what do you want and how much do you want to spend" so I knew I was possibly in the right place. He went on to tell me he had some good stuff and some junk, a 28 Chevy two door sedan, 36 Ford truck, 40 Ford two door sedan, a 35 Ford coupe and a bunch of other stuff, I asked about the coupe of course and he said I had good taste and it was at his house in a building, the rest are at another property. He told me where he lived and I wasted no time and met him later in the evening. He's owned it for 30 years, last tagged in 79 but had been driven and kept running for many years after that, it's a complete car, has some minor rust in the normal places but you don't find many in the southeast that don't. I'm going to look at the others tomorrow and I'll post some pictures. Here's the 35, and he priced it at $14k, much more than I was hoping to hear! Just finding this stuff is a rush, I love it!
$14k for that? Run away as fast as you can. Friend of mine just paid $24 for one completely done with disc brakes, hp small block chevy and all the usual goodies (no a/c).
Yeah, but just think, for ten grand you could make a nice car and not have to put a SBC in it. Dare to be different!
Some of these old guys got some stuff. I know most of the car crowd around your parts and they can surprise me with what they have stashed. Show-n-go is this sat at paradise drag strip... stop by. Quite a few Hamb members usually hit this one. I will be there but will have to head out early.
Around here 14k would be a very fair price, that is if you could find one in that condition. I kind of laugh to myself at all the banter back and forth on here, between all the posters on the initial cost of a "project car". Hell the purchase price of a project is usually no where near the final build cost on most, percentage wise, yet everyone gets hung up on the "purchase price". If I was shopping for a 35 Coupe that would be in my Shop before I even posted about it. Back to our originally scheduled program
$14k doesn't sound too bad, to a west coaster, for a solid looking coupe that hasn't been ruined with an SBC, disc brakes, and all the usual goodies. I would gladly pay, and have paid, a premium for a car that hasn't had someone else's mitts all in it.
If it's as nice as it looks, that seems like a decent asking price to me. Untouched, unmolested originals like this are hard to find.
After restoring a few cars, seeing how complete this car is, I think the price is fair. Finding a unmolested car today is a challenge. This car looks fantastic! But hey, by all means, check out all his cars first. I have jumped the gun before, and should have looked everything over before I purchased, and let other people end up buying what I really wanted due to my impulsive nature. Shopping wisely is hard to do when you see a treasure like that....
I don't know about that (untouched). It has a 49 or later flathead in it ;-) The price does sound about right to me, also.
Thanks. I guess I learned something new. Thought all early Ford flatheads outlets were in the middle of the head. I do see the difference now between that one and a 49 and up motor.
I was planning on being there last Saturday but I'm on shift at the fire department this Saturday and can't get off, maybe some will ride through downtown Calhoun and I can watch them pass thru!
If $14k included the boat I would buy it in a minute, then when you got tired of working on it you could go fishing and relax!
Given that the owner careless is storing his boat on top of the car, I don't think he really values the car and might drop his price considerably. If I was looking to build a survivor car with a flattie and a lot of character and patina, I'd be willing to pay the price. Where else do you find something like this? This is really a rare find, at least around here where I live (California), and getting more rare each time somebody gets one of these a fixes it up. I'd toss him a low offer as a starting point but would eventually pay his asking price if that's what it would take to get this piece. I don't think you can go wrong with a revived survivor.
I'm a little too tight to make an offer on the coupe, but I'd be prepared to offer the guy $41.75 and a six pack for the boat... I could even sweeten the pot with some tacos. That coupe is a great find. If you wind up getting it, please keep the thread going!
He's one of those guys that you're either going to pay his price or he'll just keep it. I'm trying to really get to know him, he's 5 minutes from me and I'd really like to learn from him and the old ways they used to do things, he's a great guy but he's a little stand offish because he doesn't know me well, which is totally understandable! I swung by this morning and he was busy and didn't have time to let me look at the other cars but he did let me check this flat head out, it's more motor than I was expecting to see, very cool! That's the hood for the 35 truck in the background, can't wait to see it.
