So I know the flat cad car runs a two piece billet heads and lots of guys have talked about building one but who has actually done it? Does it seal? If so how? What about hot spots from water p***age design?
I have sent I got from John Swanson that he made for his roadster and a few extra. I have not run mine but he has run his car without issues. http://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/0904sr-1929-ford-roadster/
Somewhere I read a pretty good discussion about two piece heads for flat motors. Here, Inliners, Hot Rod Inliners ? I'll see if I can find it. The Flat Cad was part of it. It told how and why they didn't leak.
There is a pretty good discussion in http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/homemade-2-piece-aluminum-head-for-ply-flat-6.786824/ and in post #94 38FLATTIE describes how he sealed the FlatCad 2 piece heads.
Well - I'm one of the FlatCad gang and I worked with Chris Daniels to design them in the first place . . . they work just fine. We use an O-ring seal around the outside and in a couple other areas, but we don't use anything around the stud bosses - just spray them with a bit of Hylomar. We've gotten the thing plenty hot (with a pressurized system) and have never seen any water leaks from the heads. If your deck is nice and flat and your heads are as well, then you should not have any issues. If you want to know more of have any additional questions - feel free to ping me . . . be happy to help. Also, there are things that I'd do a bit different if we made them a second time . . .
Thanks Jimmy, That is the one I was thinking of. There is a lot of information there as well as the links to Edgy and Flat Cad. It was also at Bonneville that I saw the Edgy head on his old pickup. I think the exhaust are still in the block but the intakes are over head. There is a lot of skill here.
I knew Edgy's were cast but it was such a surprise in that old truck. It is so good to see those old MOPARs get some respect. That goes for your 4s too!
I have no interest in any of Edgy's parts. I spoke to him when he was developing the cast flatty head. There is a huge difference between doing something and understanding WHY you are doing it. If you do not understand the why then moving forward is pointless.
I don't want this to deteriorate into a argument. But I don't quite understand your point about Earl understanding why he was doing what he was doing. You mean making F heads for old MoPars. Or some part of the processes. I don't know why anybody would make a short production run of these F heads. But the whole hot rod/race car deal is hard to justify beyond "It seemed like a good idea at the time."
I should build one out of red bronze! It would be super nice polished and the head gaskets wouldn't squirm due to expansion.
I'd like to see some red bronze ones . . . but I'm sure I'd hate to pay for the material to make them!
