Is there a VIN decoder app for cl***ic cars for smart phones. This would be helpful when you are at an auction looking at cars.
Any numbers prior to 1968 will be basically serial numbers, and they don't tell you very much. Good luck! ......................................... Jack
Everyone did more or less their own thing until the late 1960s or so, it would be hard to make one ap to encomp*** everything. And as mentioned most serial numbers don't give you a lot of information - or even the same information when they do have some in it. Late 50s Pontiac will tell you model year, build plant, and manual or auto trans. Early 50s Chevy will tell you which model series it is and I think build plant. Some older serials are all numbers and all you get is model year from it.

I don't know diddly squat about apps but I know the vin numbers on '54 Fords will tell you all about your car. This was posted on the '54 Ford Club of America website but the clubs founder and past president,Tom Hoskins. HRP
Vintage Ford serial numbers (or what would be considered the 'VIN' these days) as such only give you limited information; year, body type, ***embly plant, and engine. This was true for Fords until somewhere in the 70s. The data (or 'patent') plate is where the real info is but these can turn up missing, particularly the ones mounted on the doors as Ford typically did in the 60s and 70s. HRP's example above is still missing some key info; axle ratio and trans type was added in later years. These still don't always reflect possible options, for that you need the build sheet.
When I try it from my browser, I get this error: "Unable to decode VIN. Please check the number and try again. 1956 Ford VIN should look like M6GW100001"
I believe that the federally mandated VIN numbers are a 16 digit number/letter code that was started in 1968. Before 1968 serial numbers and body tags were a manufactures own system, not a universal system covering all manufactures. ..................................... Jack
