How many of you have radios in your car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by fatty, Feb 19, 2006.

  1. How many of you guys run radios in your car? I see how the older machines lack a decent opening to put in a nice head unit without breaking out the sawzall. I am working on a unit so I can play mp3's in my older toys using the stock setup. I have to buy some more components and I am wondering if other people would be interested in auto mp3 without paying the ridiculous ipod price.

I have an mp3 head unit in my daily. I burn mp3 data Cds and it reads 'em, I plan to put one in my rod someday...probably under the seat on in the glovebox. Can't beat the looks of those old am radios!

    a ford motor? :D

'bender is right... in the willys PU, i dont plan on a radio.. its simply about the car, the road and the mill. peace and quiet . . . well, not so heavy on the quiet :p

on the other hand, in the '54 i DO plan on some kind of sound system, prolly nuttin more than a simple head unit stashed in the glove box, and an XM reciever. easier to "hide" an XM antenea than a FM whip

I've got a AM/FM Stereo tape player the guy next door took out of his Mom's Accord years ago in one of those plastic "universal mount" boxes mounted sideways on the driver's side kick panel. Luckily, the significant ****ons have "brail" bumps on them because I can't see the readout, couldn't see it anyway since it quit lighting up about five years ago.
But it still plays BB, Otis, Waylon, Willie and the Rev so I'm happy

I got a radio and a cd player. Don't listen to it much though. It is back under the dash where the heater was.

I sometimes think I would like to have some tunes when the car stops moving...can't hear no stink'n music when the engine is running. Godzilla didn't have a radio...glove box, ash tray or cig lighter...excess weight on the drag strip.

In a T-bucket I built years ago I had a radio under the seat. When the car stopped I could reach under and turn it on...the rest of the time I listen to the BBC sing thru a set of zoomie headers.

I have never had a radio in any of my hot rods. Radios help avoid bordom, I never get bored driving my hot rod. Nuff said!

    AV8Paul and Bender are right!

I have no tunes in my 63 Rivi (AM still works, but who wants that ****?) and my 40 Tudor has gl***packs. I drive my cars to get away, man!!!

  12. No tunes at all.................but had a 8track in the ol 55 for about 2 months back in 1978. Don't miss that huge 8track case you had to have taking up the back seat. The back seat is for other things..............;) :)

3 hot rods , one stereo. Between the exhaust and the quick change it's useless. I never bothered putting them in my other cars. I enjoy putting in a 600 mile day with just hot rod sounds, loud exhaust, a whinning quickchange, and the wind blowing by.

I have a killer 1000 watt system in my deuce 3w.....but it's all hidden....a boxed bulkhead behind my Se**** clothed seat houses two 10" Rockford-Fosgate Subs, and two 8" R-F two way full range speakers......then I have in the kick panels two 4" tweeters......an Eclipse control head with c***ette tape and AM/FM radio, plus a 12 CD changer in the trunk.......

I get a kick out of showing up when young guys are blasting their tuner's stereos, and they never expect what I give them with my unit!

Some guys would say that it's enough just to listen to their engine or pipes........I like to listen to both.....engine sounds and stereo sounds......

    Rock and Roll!!!

  17. I would be interested on how you’re doing it. I put a full-blown system in my ’50 P/U. Amps, subs, component speakers, etc. But I find when I’m drivin it; I just listen to the Cherry Bombs. However, when I’m sitting somewhere waiting to pick up one of my kids from one of their many activities (my second job sometimes it seems) then I’m glad it’s in there.

I’m taking a different direction on the Hudson. I’ve re- wired and re-caped the old 6 volt tube radio so the smoke stays inside while it plays. Then I built an electronic voltage regulator so it always gets 6.8 volts from the 12-14 volts in a 12-volt system. Hid a ‘70s FM converter in the glove box. I listen to it whenever I’m working on the car. Future plans are to interface a cheap mp3 player into it instead of the FM converter. I just think old music sounds better played out of an old radio. (I’ve read most recordings of the late 40’s to mid 60’s were engineered to sound best on a car radio.) I would also like to find an original spring reverb unit for the rear speaker.

Although, I make sure that me and the guy 6 cars down can also hear both my music AND my exhaust. 390 Caddy headers back wide open, 4 15" Jl Audio subs om the back seat pounding the roof tin to holy hell

There are lots of brands of MP3 players on the market. I also have a daily driver that has an MP3 player and is XM satellite ready. I just burn CDRWs, so I can reload the music with different stuff without wasting a CDR. Good for 15 hours of music. I don't know why anyone wastes the money on an ipod, when you can get a cheaper better MP3 player for less!

While i can FULLY understand the reasoning behind not putting a radio in a old car...i have one simple problem with not having one..
I love music too much not to have tunes..
So..yes, i have some sort of radio in all my stuff with the exception on my 53..
Now, you can't hear it very well over the exhaust, especially on my truck with exhaust stacks about a foot from my head, but they are there..

But, this is only me.. and i'm a bubble off plumb to begin with..

There is a great radio station here in the Hudson Valley that plays Early Rockabilly, Blues, and Cowboy music. It's an AM station (WHVW Hyde Park).

I have the original tube radios in my three cars. The music that was produced for the old AM radios was tailored to the sound of the radios. The sonic limitations of the AM tube radios were made negligible by the careful production used in older music targeted for AM delivery. I miss the AM sound when my cars are put away for salted road months. The AM radios in modern cars sound horrendous. There is no comparison with the smooth tube sound of AM radio with original recordings.

The last time I had trouble with the "Sound System" in the '50, I fixed it with a file. The points on the ******** got burned and needed cleaning.

I believe the radio in my '50 Chevy sounds better overall then the sound system in my late model cars. The late model cars often have plastic interior panels that rattle and resonate. None of that in the '50.

Kids riding in my "old cars" always ask why the radio only gets OLD stations.

How the hell'd you pull that off? I tried mountin' mine the glovebox but the damn stock radio got in the way. I got the bright idea to shift the stock radio which revealed a rusted out face plate from a blown tube(?) and the whole are collapsed. so I cleaned up a little and slapped the cheapo Duraband CD player in the space connected to two 3 1/2's in the dash and the dinky 5's in the tray. UGLY! Dream system would be a cd player hidden in the a/c controller, 6x9's in the dash and an amped b*** tube in the trunk. Nothing like spreading the gospel of Rev. Al Green and Roger and Zapp while I roll:D

    ps-Rusty-pix of your '62?

  26. I have a CD player in my Chevy...I have to have music. It's not that I don't love listening to the pipes as I roll..sometimes I get tired of talking to the wife and need a little silence:D

I have an original Zenith Roto-Matic in my '40 Ford. It works great, but unfortunately about all that's on AM around here is talk/sports radio and religious stations. Thought I had found a nice easy-listening station a year or two ago, but then it got sold and changed to an all-Spanish language and music format. Caramba!!

  28. I like to picture myself cruisin in my rod listening to some great old music like in American Graffiti, but the bottom line is I wouldn't be able to hear it anyway:D...that and my radio is shot and I'm to retarded to fix it....next chance I get I'm putting a delete panel over it.

My sentiments exactly,, only I wouldn't have been so "poetic" about it.
I have a killer system in the daily and I love it. BUT, My 60 Biscayne has never had a radio in it, delete plate has never been out and its gonna stay that way.

Appreciate the music of a good set of pipes, but i grew up in the 50's. Hot rods and Rock and Roll are inseparable to me. Have a couple of discs with car tunes on them. One full of beach boys car ****, one of CCR, and one a mix of hard rockin stuff that was popular when I was in the service and life was edgy. Somedays the music just makes everything better. 75% of the time, its off. Don't want to hijack the post, but what does everyone listen to?
I just got to get a little Chuck Berry, Buddy Holley, early **** now and then. Early Stones, Doors, Alabama, Bob Segar, and everynow and then, Johnny Cash. Guess that shows I'm old, and different music takes me different places. To me, it doesn't detract from the ride, it's like a bonus.
