I have a 355 sbc 10.5:1 C/R 8062 vortec heads 480/480 cam Rpm air gap intake 750 Edelbrock If I floor the gas it spits and sputters and when I hit 3k it does the same I have a total of 36° timing and I replaced fuel pump and tried three different carbs on it and no help at all I'm at a stand still
Did you install a adjustable timing chain set? If so they have 3 marks on them an if you use the wriong one your engine will idle fine but it will not pull above 3000... Happened to me one time about 15 yrs ago..crankshaft key should be at 1 o'clock position when camshaft dot is straight down.. Or pretty close to that
sounds IGN. timing related . or coil going bad , had one that did that replaced the coil and it fixed the problem , had another one HEI , the pick coil and module were old and replaced the pick up and the rpm went to 4500 then did the same thing , then replaced the module with a aftermarket one ( Accell ) and it went to 7200 , the old (OEM) modules saturate out at low rpms .
That would be a valve timing issue. I could see it loosing power for sure. spitting and sputtering is usually the ignition breaking up. What kind of ignition system are you running ? $88.00 Chinese hei ?
LOL I run my cam retarded a little bit and my 355 spins fine. I just repaired a motor that was running fine then out of the clear blue sky it started falling on its face. I was afraid that it was loosing a control mod because it seem intermittent, like maybe the control mod was going to give some warning before it took a crap. Then I decided to check the wiring before I began throwing money at it and I found the primary ignition lead @ the switch was holding on by a thread, literally. 18 gauge wire and on strand was all that was not broken off @ the ring connector. So sometimes by luck it was making up and sometimes it was not.
